Out Of Nowhere, Something Just Rocked Earth's Magnetic Field

A GLOBAL MAGNETIC ANOMALY: On June 23rd, Earth’s quiet magnetic field was unexpectedly disturbed by a wave of magnetism that rippled around much of the globe. There was no solar storm or geomagnetic storm to cause the disturbance. So what was it?

Lately, Earth’s magnetic field has been quiet. Very quiet. The sun is in the pits of what may turn out to be the deepest Solar Minimum in a century. Geomagnetic storms just aren’t happening.

“That’s why I was so surprised on June 23rd when my instruments picked up a magnetic anomaly,” reports Stuart Green, who operates a research-grade magnetometer in his backyard in Preston UK.

“For more than 30 minutes, the local magnetic field oscillated like a sine wave.”

Our earth is protected from harmful radiation by the magnetic field generated by our core. Something caused that field to act in a strange and unexplained manner. Depending how and why it happened, it could be extremely bad for all life on Earth, or just something interesting/cool.

Earth has this big magnetic field that does things like block certain charged particles from hitting the Earth's atmosphere.

This magnetic field apparently tends to line up more or less at the pole's However it also appears to switch directions every so often (on a scale of hundreds of thousands of years.) We know this based on the way iron atoms line up in sediment... or something like that.

Anyway, we may be due for another reversal. We aren't sure if it is, how fast it will be, if the field will go to zero or just be chaotic for a few years, decades, or centuries.

We don't really know the effect this will have on Earth's civilization.

We do know that there are no mass extinctions associated with the field flips though.

Things like this make people think that the field flip is happening soon, which it probably is. But on the scale of time we are talking about a couple centuries is soon.

Looking at how all of those plots look different outside of the region of interest makes me curious. Maybe it's just because they're dn/dt plots, and likely all use different instruments and calibrations, but the scales are all fairly different and none of them are quiet outside the region of interest. Given the correlation, clearly something happened I'm just a bit skeptical of the significance.
