Before the British Invasion, the Hot Rod scene was just big in SoCal (almost as big as the surfer scene). The Beachboys, in 1962, came out with this song: 409
409. The Beach Boys. (1962)

In 1970-71, Rick Nelson was making a comeback with The Stone Canyon Band. There are many Stone Canyons, three in the L.A. area alone, but the name always reminded me of the area between UCLA and Mulholland off Beverly Glen. Plus, in about 1970, we were given a free concert at Magic Mountain, featuring Rick Nelson and (I think) his Stone Canyon Band. These were exceptionally nice times in L.A.

It was great for me as a young man. Shooting .22's, rolling a car while racing in a vineyard, going to the beach, going to the mountains, going to a Dodgers and Lakers games, so much to do and so many ways to get in trouble. Sorry you missed it.

Smh really? Are you first generation Californian?

IYKYK Cali, is the land of the free. California will always be home. This is renegade country, we don’t need the man to tell us how and when to live.

From Compton, ELA, ESLongo, Berdo, La Ana, El Diego y Tijuas...: we live free brother. Besides all the politics and Sacramento grandstanding, it will never affect the true Californian freedom spirit.

ONJ - Xanadu.

I think I saw the movie in S.F. with my fiance just before heading to Buffalo (1980). But, the movie was set in L.A. and featured the Pan Pacific Auditorium, which was in my classmate's old neighborhood in the Fairfax district. We were both UCLA alum, so we met down in his neighborhood (in L.A.) and he took me to Pink's hotdogs and we stopped at the Pan Pacific (around 1974). I'd never been to Pink's until then. Though my memory is foggy, the auditorium was near CBS, where I was on the Art Linkletter show back in the 50s.

Randy Newman - I Love L.A. (Official Video)

Beat by a Hater!  Oh well -- deserving of a double!

80's LA is the only LA I ever knew, and is perfectly displayed in this video ... so horribly sad to see what a pit it has become because of liberals... :(

Danny Kaye - the D-O-D-G-E-R-S song. This was right about 1955, I became a rabid Dodger fan and that lasted until High School. This is my Dodgers he's singing about!

My life ended in 1985 (but it got better!), my daughter was born and I was returning to L.A., my hometown I left 13 years earlier. Here's a little tune from a group formed in L.A. (recording in Nashville) Highway 101 - Cry Cry Cry in 1986. It was surprisingly country. The lead singer, Paulette Carlson, is originally from Minnesota, who went on a solo path after the group made 3 albums.
