I know jack shit about this war, but after a quick read I find it fascinating that the republicans were the same as our extreme left today; young, stupid, and/or poor.

what's the story behind that nun? The Republicans desecrated Catholic graves and pulled the bodies from the caskets. It should also be noted "Republicans" in this case were commies. for those who don't know. |

I don't think the Spanish ever fully recovered, or ever will. |

And we had US volunteers in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade there fighting for them......insane

Also guess what they did to entire villages of people who disagreed with them History may look very different at this war in a 100 years. |

That was my guess. I'd not heard of the SCW View Quote Seriously? There was this iconic photo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Falling_Soldier Hemingway wrote about it in For Whom the Bell Tolls. Orwell was in it and it caused him to turn against Stalinism. A pretty good movie, IIRC English, was made about it in the '90s. But from the commie perspective, of course. |

Spanish civil?
Dang, I was beaten to it. I have two rifles from the war |
|
I find my knowledge of the Spanish Civil War is lacking.
Can Arfcom recommend some reading material to remedy that? |

To be fair, there weren't too many good guys left by the end. It was ugly.
Also, each side, much like politics any where, were coalitions of groups with wide varieties of beliefs, ideals, and goals. The Spanish Civil War by Hugh Thomas is considered an even handed telling of the history. It is long though. When I read it, I kept a scratchpad of notes just so I could keep track of all the groups and leaders involved. For Whom the Bell Tolls is a good fictional account of the war from the International Brigade perspective by Ernest Hemingway. |

Yes the whole country went insane that badly: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/57/SpanishLeftistsShootStatueOfChrist.jpg It's depressing and scary how a society can turn and savagely kill and destroy within. There was a thread about how dogs will start eating their dead owners when left alone and hungry. Someone stated that they had been to a scene of a deceased elderly lady and her two little dogs started to eat on her. Poster stated, " it gave me a new outlook on dogs and how they can become feral." That statement struck me as a necessity for surviving, however humans kill with gleeful savagery and have no excuse to become feral. |

Little known fact: Spanish "El Tigre" 1892 style lever action carbines saw limited "emergency" service in the SCW.
The Poles scrubbed a bunch of 98a and sent them there too. |

Even someone with a cursory knowledge of WWII should know about the Spanish Civil War.
