Seriously - try the Oregon coast. Astoria has Fort George brewery and some decent food both downtown and on the water. Seaside has the aquarium where you can feed the seals and indoor bumper cars & tilt-a-whirl. Cannon Beach has a bunch of good food. Manzanita has golf and some good food. Tillamook has the Cheese Factory, a Pelican Brewing tasting room, Werner Jerky & Werner Brewing, Oceanside & Netarts have great beaches, some good food, and the Cape Meares lighthouse. Pacific City has the Pelican Pub and the new Cape Kiwanda Lodge that looks super swanky. There's a casino in Lincoln City, another lighthouse in Newport, and some amazing coastline between Yachats and Florence. You can drive on the beach in Pacific City and Florence, or rent a 4-wheeler or sand buggy. Kayaking, great salmon and steelhead fishing, ocean fishing day trips for salmon, bottom fish, or tuna. Crabbing that doesn't even require a boat near Wheeler. There is no shortage of stuff to do, eat, or drink.

Sure, we've got our share of hippies and flakes but also a bunch of loggers, dairy farmers, commercial fishermen and oyster farmers, and general salt-o-the-earth folks.

Lincoln City has one of the best restaurants in the state.  It used to be a hole in the wall on 101 called Hearth And Table, but recently they moved into and renovated an old bowling alley called Old Line Lanes.  The food at most all of the many brew pubs on the coast can be counted on to be "meh" at best, so don't go to them looking for really great food.  Also, if you're in Lincoln City or Newport, don't buy in to all the Mo's hype.  It doesn't suck by any stretch, but it's not as good as most people say it is.

And in reference to the post above bitching about the beaches here in Oregon, yeah, they're not for swimming.  Even if the water wasn't in the mid-50's during the summer, the fucking currents and undertow would drown your ass in most places.  The water isn't the blue you imagine and the sand isn't a shimmering white.  They're both grey and ice fucking cold.  But, if you get rid of your expectations of such, you will find that the coast here has it's own beauty that can be very breathtaking.

I just came back from a weekend in Portland Oregon, with my Gf as we make an annual trip for food and beer.  A few things I noticed as we galavanted about town.

1.  Almost every local shop had signs up saying "any race, any color, any religion, any gender is welcome here". But the place has to be 90% white people.

2.  In the same shops there would be bags, posters, shirts etc that said "read, rise, resist" or "vote, rise, resist"

3.  I noticed was how many women AND men had their hair dyed green or blue.  Many of the older women with colored hair were single or lesbian.

4.  It has been a year since I was there last and the homelessness seems to have multiplied 10x.  So many tent cities, panhandlers and makeshift shelters.  Along with the smell, holy moly the smell.

5.  Many of the "men" around the area all look very defeated, weak and with eye contact have the look of a domesticated animal.  No spark or drive.

My gf and I used to love going there for the food, beer and atmosphere but she wants to find a new destination after this weekend.  Wtf happened to Portland?

Nice, thanks all for the tips on new places to go.  I'm especially down for the local places with good food.  I'm sure the misses wants to try a different state for our next outing but when we visit her family I'm sure we could swing a trip to the coast.

I've lived on the area forever, I think you just missed the shithole aspects or weren't looking. Chicago is probably really safe for tourists, doesn't mean it's safe. The number of homeless people living permanently on the side of the road in the city is astounding these days. It's ridiculous. The riots that break out every time a bunch of anarchists / liberals decide to burn some stuff are great to. This city is well on it's way too being Oakland, just angrier, guiltier, and whiter.

This is the topology of the Portland area.
You can clearly see the flood plane from the Missoula floods.

A good tidal wave coming the opposite direction would follow the same pattern.

I keep living in hope (especially since my house is well above that flood plane).

The flood stretched as far south as Eugene so that would be the enema this state needs. I've lived in OR my entire 63
yrs and Portland has always been a shithole one way or another but I guess it just keeps exceeding all expectations. I
haven't been there in 25 yrs or better except for a work seminar so I don't know other than what I read and see on the
news. If the only place I can get something is Portland I don't need it that bad.

Rising Star in Wheeler is incredible.

And no, the beaches in OR are not for swimming or sunbathing. On the 4th of July you will probably want a sweatshirt.

Portlands problems are home grown. My son and his fiance moved up there last year. Her for work. Same company so she has an apples to apples comparison. Trying to hire people at her store was a nightmare. Keeping them was as bad. Super snowflake entitled whiny bitches. It was way worse than any California work experience she ever had. She couldn't believe how bad it was. Even her management was fucked up. Lazy and unmotivated. Did I mention she was 25 when she took over that store? Or maybe we only sent you the worst. P.S. Portland is for loser that couldn't make it in Seattle anyway.

One of the worst things about portland is that the political leaders in the city routinely side with violent drug-ridden scum bag rioters...errr...'protestors'  over the police, businesses, and law abiding citizens. It's been going on for years and I know Portland's not unique in this regard but it's made a very real negative impact on that city, especially downtown. During Occupy, these shitheads assaulted police, assaulted citizens, destroyed public and private property, tossed a few weapons of mass destruction, lots of drug use and a few ODs, rape, and God knows what else wasn't noticed when they turned several blocks of nice city park space into a literal shithole...and the libtards running that town refused to allow the cops to enforce the law. It was madness.

Seattle used to be a great town when my aunt and uncle bought their first house there back in the early 70's and my uncle is a liberal but I'd say he leans  just a little left of center and is rather conservative in many other things. But I remember even as early as the late 70's saying that the only bad thing about Seattle was all the California transplants coming there and monkeying (see what I did there) things up. It is almost as bad as Portland now and he still lives in the same house (aunt died a few years ago) but he still blames California. Thankfully he's got a home in the Cascades too and it is staunchly conservative there and his friends there re-ground him before he goes back to Seattle.

Never saw a place go down the toilet as quick as Portland. Well except for maybe Seattle and the surrounding cities.

We used to go to the Saturday market once or twice a year. Last time we went and walked down the waterfront. We were treated to a bunch of homeless panhandlers lining the foot path begging for money. Then to top it off we were also treated to a couple junkies passed out on a park bench with their heads resting against each other holding them upright with a needle still in one of their arms. What a “progressive” city. They have progressed way beyond “weird” now. That city needs a good fire downtown.

I've been here 30 years and I can't dispute anything said here. If you don't think it was the Californians who fucked up just look at the Bay Area. People who couldn't afford to live there moved up here. It's been getting worse not better.

i will say that after the last protest the terrorists got the worse of it from the cops.

Best restaurant in Lincoln City was the Dory Cove at Lands End, felt like you were going way north of town to get there back in the day. Burned down, google says in 2006. I'll miss that place. I guess they opened up in a new location toward the south end of town, haven't been there yet but we never go to the coast anymore - once the casinos opened, the traffic on 101 and 18 got so bad it just didn't seem worth the effort. Back in the 80s and 90s it seemed like we spent at least one or two weekends a month out there.

I grew up in the Portland area.

As a kid in the 80's, it was an occasional treat to go into downtown and mess around shopping, hitting restauraunts, etc. There was always bums but they were scattered around like most cities.

I was just home this past July and I can't believe how bad it is now. The traffic is INSANE because the environmentalists won't allow any new road construction.

Housing prices are fucking criminal. $300,000 for a beat down, two bedroom shanty in the ghetto and $1,500 a month minimum for a 1 bedroom apartment. LOL! ALso because of environmentalists.

Portland was a a liberal city, but recently it has devolved into a nutcase, commie leftist shithole. It's like Venezuela but with more weed.

So much this. One time a coworker and I were sitting in the office and we used some quick wiki census data and figured out that since Portland added a major element to their road system, almost all of the nearby cities that make up the metro (Gresham, hillsborito, tigard etc.) have quadrupled in population. 4x the people and no additional roads. What could go wrong? Like everything with liberalism it's a completely self inflicted wound. Their idea of "solving" this problem is to waste all their transportation $ on mass transit that a tiny % of people use and to make driving / parking as expensive as possible to force the working poor 'masses' onto bikes and Max cars. The rich they will allow to drive.

Huh? True downtown is maybe 2/5 mile X 3/5 mile. If you include Portland inside of the Willamette and I-405, it's about 1 mile x 1.5-2 miles.

That isn't that big.

If you include the metro area it's more like 18 miles by 12 miles. That's 216 square miles if my math is correct.

The downtown area isn't so big, but all that other ground is still Portland.
