There's a casino in Lincoln City, another lighthouse in Newport, and some amazing coastline between Yachats and Florence. You can drive on the beach in Pacific City and Florence, or rent a 4-wheeler or sand buggy. Kayaking, great salmon and steelhead fishing, ocean fishing day trips for salmon, bottom fish, or tuna. Crabbing that doesn't even require a boat near Wheeler. There is no shortage of stuff to do, eat, or drink. Sure, we've got our share of hippies and flakes but also a bunch of loggers, dairy farmers, commercial fishermen and oyster farmers, and general salt-o-the-earth folks. And in reference to the post above bitching about the beaches here in Oregon, yeah, they're not for swimming. Even if the water wasn't in the mid-50's during the summer, the fucking currents and undertow would drown your ass in most places. The water isn't the blue you imagine and the sand isn't a shimmering white. They're both grey and ice fucking cold. But, if you get rid of your expectations of such, you will find that the coast here has it's own beauty that can be very breathtaking. |

My gf and I used to love going there for the food, beer and atmosphere but she wants to find a new destination after this weekend. Wtf happened to Portland? |

Nice, thanks all for the tips on new places to go. I'm especially down for the local places with good food. I'm sure the misses wants to try a different state for our next outing but when we visit her family I'm sure we could swing a trip to the coast.

One of the worst things about portland is that the political leaders in the city routinely side with violent drug-ridden scum bag rioters...errr...'protestors' over the police, businesses, and law abiding citizens. It's been going on for years and I know Portland's not unique in this regard but it's made a very real negative impact on that city, especially downtown. During Occupy, these shitheads assaulted police, assaulted citizens, destroyed public and private property, tossed a few weapons of mass destruction, lots of drug use and a few ODs, rape, and God knows what else wasn't noticed when they turned several blocks of nice city park space into a literal shithole...and the libtards running that town refused to allow the cops to enforce the law. It was madness.

Never saw a place go down the toilet as quick as Portland. Well except for maybe Seattle and the surrounding cities.
We used to go to the Saturday market once or twice a year. Last time we went and walked down the waterfront. We were treated to a bunch of homeless panhandlers lining the foot path begging for money. Then to top it off we were also treated to a couple junkies passed out on a park bench with their heads resting against each other holding them upright with a needle still in one of their arms. What a “progressive” city. They have progressed way beyond “weird” now. That city needs a good fire downtown. |

I've been here 30 years and I can't dispute anything said here. If you don't think it was the Californians who fucked up just look at the Bay Area. People who couldn't afford to live there moved up here. It's been getting worse not better.
i will say that after the last protest the terrorists got the worse of it from the cops.

Best restaurant in Lincoln City was the Dory Cove at Lands End, felt like you were going way north of town to get there back in the day. Burned down, google says in 2006. I'll miss that place. I guess they opened up in a new location toward the south end of town, haven't been there yet but we never go to the coast anymore - once the casinos opened, the traffic on 101 and 18 got so bad it just didn't seem worth the effort. Back in the 80s and 90s it seemed like we spent at least one or two weekends a month out there.

I grew up in the Portland area.
As a kid in the 80's, it was an occasional treat to go into downtown and mess around shopping, hitting restauraunts, etc. There was always bums but they were scattered around like most cities. I was just home this past July and I can't believe how bad it is now. The traffic is INSANE because the environmentalists won't allow any new road construction. Housing prices are fucking criminal. $300,000 for a beat down, two bedroom shanty in the ghetto and $1,500 a month minimum for a 1 bedroom apartment. LOL! ALso because of environmentalists. Portland was a a liberal city, but recently it has devolved into a nutcase, commie leftist shithole. It's like Venezuela but with more weed. |
