We are a contractor with a lot of pipeline and utility companies.  This is not the hill you want to die on.

If a homeowner runs us off we don’t fight it not our call, but it’s pretty rare that we run across anyone who cares.  Most people want it done.

You really think they would build power lines without an easement?

Actually.... the electric co-op that services my area just put in some 100kish volt poles on somebody else’s easement, they haven’t even finished connecting everything up, and now they have to move them.

Pic of backyard and power lines. Basically the power lines run halfway though my property and the other half in the other owners property.  The big trees in the back are on the other person's property and are about 50-60 feet south of the power lines.  All of the stuff they want to cut is about 10-30 feet north of the lines.

When’s the last time maintenance or inspection was done on those lines?  Other than the trees up against the tower, nothing looks overly an issue unless picture is deceiving me or they need room to get people/ equipment in.  Though most of out right of ways are clear just run by with the Jarraff to keep things cut back.

Looks like you have a H structure with double x bracing. Likely a 161 kv line or similar, static lines or fiber on top. Pole looks in decent shape for what we can see.  If the trees around the poles are your sticking point.  Live to fight another day, gotta cut those to maintenance or replace the poles.

i have 2 big oak trees in my front yard (i live on a corner). i've had the power company come out several times and trim them so they don't grow into the lines. they can't cut down the trees as they are absolutely on my property and if they tried, they'd be trespassing...because i wouldn't give them consent to do so. however, they CAN be trimmed as the canopies do hang over the easement and can get (and have gotten) into the lines. the first time they every "trimmed" them, they butchered them. they cut them back so far it took about a decade before they didn't look weird. after that, and the ass chewing they received, they don't cut them as far back..only about 3 feet, or so.

here, the easement is (i think) 8 feet. so anything beyond 8 feet from the right-of-way (i.e., the road) belongs to the homeowner. the bad thing, is that the homeowner is responsible for keeping the grass cut up to the road. if they don't, the city can charge them a fee for having to come out and cut....EVEN THOUGH IT'S THE CITY'S PROPERTY! another dumb-ass law i will never understand.

As a teenager I argued with the tree trimmers about my Mom's huge sycamore trees. I was able to keep them from cutting them for several years. When they finally got fed up with me they cut them.down to the ground.

That was the best thing that ever happened to my Mom's yard. As a kid I would take 50 bags of huge leaves and it made me wonder why I ever cared if they cut them down.

Even doing that is not guaranteed. Utility companies have not always been required to record easements, but needed to have them on file.

True, but most are either recorded or made reference to in the current Deed or survey.

Everyone who thinks that if an easement is not on their deed then there is no easement is wrong.  Easements/encumbrances are not required to be ion the deed.  Depending on you state residential title searches when selling land are only required to go back so far.  It is the property owner with the deed that doesn't show the easement that can go pound sand when the utility shows up with the deed.  Think you own the minerals rights to your land because your deed does not mention it.  LOL...  If you are buying land, and you are getting a title search, pay more and require that the title search company goes back at least 100 years looking for easements and mineral rights sale relating to the property.  Anyone who does not is taking a gamble.

We have similar lines by my work. One afternoon a helicopter with a gigantic mower/tree shredder attachment was demolishing trees that were not even close to the lines. It landed in an empty field about 200 yards away and we talked with the operators. One of our questions was why they were eating trees not even remotely close to the lines. Found out that they had a contract that if any tree took out a line, they were liable for millions. Hince they did not take chances and they went FernGully on it.

Spike them, or buy a box of 20 penny nails. Chainsaw eaters, loggers little buddies, then they spray to kill and someone flames them at night, very entertaining.

Seriously by your photo the trans lines must be over your house. As long as the company can travers over with equipment then there is no reason to clearcut all the trees in your backyard. Maybe ask them if the trans lines are harmful to your health. What about the stories of problems with child development.

You may get the RE to come out to look at your situation to see if leaving the trees or looking at ways to have some kind of natural groundcover is possible. Chances are that the RE will find some common ground.

And for property value, well it is now what you paid, taxes. The next owner may notice the BIG wires overhead.

I've chained trees up to keep them from taking out the lines to give the power company time to clear them.

When we had a tree down on the line I took the opportunity to drop another tree that was going to be an issue in the future.

Fucking pine trees.

As far as I'm concerned, whatever I can do to help them with their easement is less hassle than the power being out.

If they have an easement there isn't much you'll be able to do.

They asked for an easement on my property to unify a line after a storm rebuild and I denied it since it would grant them access to literally within 3ft. of my front porch. They bitched but I told them there was no way I was granting access and there would be a court battle over the short distance they were trying to annex.

Long story short they built it back the way it was. I'm at the end of one line run and neighbor 300 yds. down the road is on the end of another run. I still have my front yard, not the power co.

IDGAF if it put me on their shit list.

I used to trim around power lines. On the rare occasion someone would refuse to let us do the work we would just call the head power guy.
The conversation was normally very brief.

"We won't touch your trees but if for whatever reason they cause the power to go out we will be billing you for what it costs to put a line crew out on an emergency call, do you know what an after hours line crew cost per hour?"

That was normally the end of the conversation.
We did have a few people that would hire their own "tree guy" to trim the trees which was fine by us as long as they got the trees to clearance specs.

eta: after looking at your pic almost all of the time transmission or distribution lines get clear cut of anything that is considered a shade tree

they just cut down a bunch on nice little Oak trees that were planted under the lines on the road I live on, it would have been 20-30 years before the trees were even close to the lines

Many years ago there was a front page local news  article about some idiot that had his “prize” trees cut by the utility company.

Dumb ass planted them right under the right of way.

Local power guy basically was quoted as “oh well”

Look at the survey. I have had the power company make mistakes. They have mowed my Yucca plants flat while mowing the easement. These were 4 feet from the edge of the right of way. Also during a storm they ran a guy wire off the easement and into my yard. I like electricity.

Usually you can work with them to find some middle ground, but that depends on the specific situation.  They have the right and responsibility to maintain their easements and it is for safety and grid resiliency.

I would play nice and maybe they will help plant some screening plants.  Going full retard will cost you money and time but will result in the trees still being cut down.

Before it goes from (it would take 25 years to grow this big) to (but why cut it down the tree is 25 years old).

Can you tell I do easement entitlements.

You had the right to not buy a house with a utility easement. The easement was there longer than you owned the house, the time to look into it was before you bought it.

They aren't overhead my house they are bordering my backyard property line.  Sorry but not everyone has a small ass yard like you.  FWIW there is more cancer in your damn cell phone than there is from these power lines that are at more than a safe distance away.
