The rover has run out of juice to run its own systems due to a massive dust storm on Mars and has gone in to sleep mode.
If it does not get Sun light soon in may turn into a frozen brick and not be able to power up again.

RIP little fella.

Update, the Rover is still sleeping.

Sad that it may finally be over for the little guy, but damn did he ever last longer than anyone had hoped.   What a kick ass mission.  There is still hope that it comes back though, so lets hope it pulls through the storm.

Next rover in the line up is a Curiosity style, so no more solar

Try 15 years.
From OP's link:
The nearly 15-year-old rover launched in 2003 and has been exploring Mars since it landed in January 2004. Opportunity has lasted more than 50 times longer than its original 90-day mission plan

It would be great to have a nuclear RTG and not have any panels.

I always thought the Rovers needed a dust brush (like a windshield wiper) to keep the panels clean.  They don't have one?

And didn't a dust storm blow the dust off a rover once,  allowing it to recharge?

I have an idea. The solar cells could be mounted on a long trianglar “tubes” that could rotate on the long axis. The top face exposed, bottom 2 faces covered by enclosure below them. If top face gets duty just rotate to expose clean cells.  The rotation could brush against some bristles.

Have enough of them and you could rotate individual tubes to clean without disrupting power.

Sad the the fucking hippies forced NASA to use solar power. Good thing they did with Curiosity, and will with other new ones.

Some sort of soft silicone brush that cleans off the dust like those cameras they put on NASCAR cars that rotate and clean all the tire residue off.

Outstanding! Now we can lay off the team that's been running that damned thing and save some money for more important things. It failed to find Matt Damon so the mission is an utter failure!

The Opportunity team should look back on a job well done. I look forward to the day that even a small item of the rover is returned to Earth as a testimony to our desire to explore and expand in our universe.
