I would spare a possum before a coon, the former not being a carrier of rabies and eating their weight daily in vermin. However, I have to admit, catching one, cornering it and raising my .22 to dispatch it only to have it literally covering its eyes like it knew it was expecting imminent death convinced me to spare the little bugger. Not surprisingly, it gave our property a wide berth thereafter, and we never had trouble from raccoons again. Scarily intelligent and expressive.

Raccoons are shot on sight.  I use dog-proof raccoon traps and Have-A-Heart traps, then shoot them with a suppressed .22LR pistol.  It’s the only animal I despise.

I have caught dozens of coon in that trap and I have never had a mangled paw.

It is probably the nicest trap out there for not mangling paws.  Lots of surface area to hold the arm, but not enough to cause mangling.

Leg hold traps are a different matter…

Animals abilities to survive are amazing.  I was walking around Mount Tamalpais, there were (or are) benches along the trail.

Walking past a bench I noticed a bird laying on it's side under the bench.  About ten steps past I stopped because isomething didn't look quite right.  As soon as I turned around the bird flew off.

Raccoons would probably be pretty damn hard to eradicate.

They're smart, can use their hands, climb well, have terrific sense of smell, eat practically anything, and don't mind living anywhere that humans do.   In fact, they kind of thrive on it.   Not to mention they breed prodigiously.

If anything, humans have extended raccoons far beyond their normal range on earth.

One week I shot a raccoon a day, at contact distance as they were bailing out of the chicken yard.

I put up a 10 mile charger on 400 feet of fence because it was depressing to shoot nature in the face, and have had a truce with them for years now.  I'm pretty sure there were some brain damaged raccoons stumbling around for the first year or so.

I lost five turkeys chicks this year but that's on me because the turkey run was in a different part of the property.

Raccoons have 5 fingers...no thumbs.  And they are not opposable.  But they can grasp stuff better than most any other critter out there.  I've held baby raccoons.  They grab your finger almost like a human child.

I think that is written in there so people don't go release them down the road where they become somebody else's problem.

I have no problem killing pests, but honestly I probably would have let him live for how funny that was. I've usually just baited and shot pests, never trapped. How would you remove the trap from that guy without getting mauled?

No joke, my dad had a pet racoon when he was growing up. I thought he was joking the first time he told me and didn't believe him until my grandmother backed up the story and showed me a picture.

@Clarinath

Any luck drawing the big guy in?

I went on Saturday and a small guy came in, ate for 40 minutes, then left.  Nothing big on the cameras yet.  We’ve had 4 separate sows come in, a yearling and a 2 1/2 year old.
