Every one knows the most common army unit patches like 1st Cav, 3rd ID and 82nd airborne.  Lets see if anyone can identify one of my old units.  And lets see some of your rare unit patches.

Yep you are right, the unit was very small but we had a huge mission supporting III Corps. And it was deactivated a few years ago..

83rd ARCOM, formerly the 83rd Infantry Division in WW1 and WW2. In WW1 it was known as the "Ohio Division" as most of the troops came from Ohio. The center design spells "Ohio".

When I was in the USAR, I didn't really know anything about the 83rd's history.  I didn't learn about the 83rd Infantry Division until years later, the WW2 history of the unit is very interesting (I think).  I've become something of an 83rd ID buff since then.  I'm proud to have been able to wear that patch.

I think the 83rd ARCOM is all but defunct now.

This doesn't exist anymore but a lot of veterans have it on the right shoulder of the uniform hanging up in their closet.

Although there are many veterans that served in a war zone doing a job represented by this patch (including the first Army combat death in Vietnam) you will never see it on the right shoulder of any veteran's uniform.

I've seen quite a few of them until the late 80's as combat patches on some senior NCOs.

They were "radio research".

Most of them were assigned to the 509th Radio Research Group and then attached to the various divisions and groups through out the country.
