When I wore it, we called it the "Bald Gynecologist" patch.

Yep.  Spent some time in and out of Hellenikon between 1980 and 1992... until they ended Rote for the Herk squadrons.

I have a bunch of patches that are familiar, but "not quite right" to
the people currently on active duty.  The AF has a tendency to rename
units, re-assign them from base to base, and change aircraft types and/
or missions.  So, unique in the fact that they no longer exist in the old form, not unique in that the insignia is mostly the same.
A couple of patches I wore for one assignment, while not exactly rare, they were rare enough most active duty had no idea what they were until you started to explain, then "Oh!  Those guys."

Although there are many veterans that served in a war zone doing a job represented by this patch (including the first Army combat death in Vietnam) you will never see it on the right shoulder of any veteran's uniform.

I was pre-Polk. JRTC spent its first four years at LRAFB and Ft. Chaffee. When I left they were still tossing around Ft. Huachuca and Camp McCoy as possible new homes.

Patch

Unit crest

2nd of 3 patches I wore on AD.

1st was the 82nd, as it was sewn onto my uniforms at reception for my contract assignment.

Then this one above, with the crest on the beret.

Last was the 18th Abn Corps Dragon.

All between 1984-88.

they were a line maneuver unit in the late 80s, early 90s. Deployed to desert storm.
My Senior Drill sgt had one on his right as well back in 2002.

Yes, they were.  They were police constables. SEAL and SF trained.  Not as "high-speed" as the ICTF guys but ICTFs standards were being dropped extremely low in early 2011.  Very lax recruiting standards.

If he served in Viet Nam he probably does. My dad's isn't a patch though, it's a metal shield thing that hangs from the breast pocket button.
