Everyone says a glass of red wine is good for your heart. I know nothing about wine.
What's the difference in a Pinot and a merlot?
What's a good wine to start with?

Look for CA, OR and WA wines there's a huge amount of expertise.  American wines have a "cleaner" taste and are generally more "fruit forward".  A large portion of European wines are infected with Brettanomyces which gives a musty or Old World taste.  I prefer New World wines including US, Argentina and Australian.

You can sometimes get lucky and find a decent red for under $10.  $10-15 will get you better and it's up from there. Of course there's lots of overhyped and overpriced wine on the market.

Two (or three) buck chuck is crap, sorry.

I see no French wines listed here, so I get to throw my .02 around.

Coudoulet de Beaucastel.

Its a Cotes-du-Rhone (1 of 5 regions of France) and is one of my favorites.

Very nice. Not a recommendation I expected here, but I agree. For a real splurge, the Chateau de Beaucastel is fantastic.

Apothic
Woop Woop (Australia)
Root One (Chile)
Stump Jump GSM (Australia)
Beringer Knights Valley cabernet
Menage a Trois
Cono Sur "Vision" Pinot Noir (Chile)

ETA: this $16 zin will give any "high end" Napas a run for their money

Not sweet.  Although I've noticed that lots of people confuse fruity taste with the actual presence of sugar.

Also, there's nothing wrong with sweet wines.  There are some fantastic sweet wines.
