I've been very pleased with my Socom762RC. Sound level, tone are good. Great materials, good qd lock up and repeatable, small poi shift. Have a form 4 in on a mystic x and got to fondle it Thursday. Looks pretty slick, but it's screw on, not qd.

IMO,  a qd 30 cal can is the ideal first can.

I have been thinking about form 1ing a maglite into a can for my sbr. The only thing preventing me from it in the past was that I have no machining/lathe capability. But now, its a screw together procedure.
Mostly so if I blow it apart or wear it out, I'm not out a grand... I've heard those shorter barrel 556 guns can be hard on cans.

I'm happy with the M4-2000 on my 11.5.  If I could do it over, I'd probably go with a .30 titanium can.

Close, but freeze plug blast baffles aren't going to last, especially on a 11.5" rifle.

I'm not sure anyone has tested form 1 cans next to commercial other than by ear. My form 1 9mm can sounds really close to the AAC evo 9I have. But again, just by ear without any sophisticated meters to actually measure them i can't say for sure how they perform.

Maybe not exactly the same, but given that it's STILL going to be loud (I.e. not hearing safe) even with a suppressor, the practical difference seems negligible.

I've shot my $850 AAC 762SDN6 next to my homebuilt $100 suppressor next to each other (both on 14.5" ARs), and I really couldn't tell a differnce, and neither could the two other people I was shooting with that day.

Pretty cool.

Wish I had the skills and access to a machine shop.

If you have larger rifle calibers, always, ALWAYS get a 308 can for rifle suppression first.  You can always suppress the 556 w it, trade off being weight/size. Likewise for pistols, get a 45 first.
Diversify after that.

Better be damn sure the new baffle is identical to the replaced part. Unlikely Batfe would ever know, but the issue remains.

The skills and tools needed are minimal.  Definitely don't need a machine shop.  Start with a solvent trap, once the form 1 is approved drill a hole in the end cap.  Then use freeze plugs for baffles.. you can form them with a cheap jig and a bench vise.  Hand drill to drill the holes.

Mine cost me about $230 (not including stamp since I'd be paying that for a commercial can also).  Sound wise, without any metering device.. it sounds comparable to my brothers YHM Phantom that cost a lot more.  I'm pretty happy with it.  Works well enough and was a fun little project.

Nice, I'm assuming they sell different sized tubes and plugs? I have an Omega, but I'd like a .22 and .45 can....just don't want to spend $1500+ on them.

Yep, SDTA has tubes and plugs in like 3 different sizes now.  There are also machine shops that will make you a solvent trap to whatever specs you ask for.

That's what I thought. 'Maker' and 'manufacturer' are the same thing in every world except maybe BATFE's. It's the same kind of bs trap as constructive intent. Probably only ever an issue if they're already on your ass about something else. I would be wary of having freeze plugs laying around, but I'm the kind of wuss who didn't buy his sbr upper until the stamp came in and the lower was engraved.

No, but they are filling .mil orders. Wait time quoted to me in early July was 'early 2016 we think' for a serial number.

I'd still like to have one, but I'll wait till they are on shelves and re evaluate the market options then. Easy for me since I have the socom already.
