Temple of Doom scared the ever living crap out of my 7yo FYI. She was fine until the human sacrifice scene.
Wife still gives me crap for that. I'm at that awkward age where I saw these movies as a kid...but often times it was on broadcast TV with the worst parts censored out. Now that I have my own, I can watch them with my kids, but only in all their glory. Great example: Back to the Future. I loved that movie as a kid, but I don't want my young kids watching Biff try to rape McFly's mom in 1955. I could stop it and make them leave of course, but it's not worth it IMO. |

I need some movie ideas for my 7-year old. No sex, no f-bombs, no slasher movies, no extreme violence. Looking for stuff besides animated movies. Examples of what I'm looking for include: The Goonies ET Ghostbusters (the real one, not the shitty one) Star Wars (we don't speak of Eps. 1-3) Indiana Jones Gremlins Poor suggestions: Showgirls Nightmare on Elm Street Goodfellas Event Horizon View Quote Firewalker |

Flight of the Navigator scared the crap out of me as a kid.
On the other hand, Temple of Doom never bothered me. Goes to show you never can tell what a kid will react to. |

How about just fun documentaries on Bigfoot or ufo's etc. Ghost adventures maybe?
|
|
Wallace and Grommit (any of them)
Time Bandits Clash of the Titans (original) Willow The Last Mimsy Witch Mountain / Return to Witch Mountain The Earthling War GamesGremlins (maybe) Honey, I Shrunk (series) Harry Potter series Indian in the Cupboard Invaders from Mars (1986) Chicken Run City of Ember |

Poltergeist would be a fun one.... I saw that when I was her age and I didn't sleep for a week.
Space Camp The Abyss field of dreams frequency The great outdoors Major League Mr. Baseball All those would be fun for a 7 year old. |

I have a 6 year old and have been watching "older" movies with him, a lot have already been mentioned.

You mean the Original one with James Arness--great call. The remake with Kurt Russell was good, but all the dope-smoking may not be ok with a 7yo. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

If they like to read try the Creppy Pasta books. Scary short stories for kids.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (ETA beat like a dismembered monster!)
Abbott and Costello Go To Mars Abbott and Costello Meet The Mummy Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff (may be too intense since it is a murder mystery, but it's classic for us older kids!) |

No Escape with Owen Wilson is on Netflix now. As a parent, it was tough to watch and imagine being in that situation. I had nightmares after thinking of my daughter seeing stuff like that. Whatever you do, don't let your kid see that! I needed parental guidance. ETA: We loved Stranger Things - it was very reminiscent of my childhood days and drew heavily from Goonies, ET, and a couple of other kid adventure classics with a bit of Carpenter and Steven King influence/music. A bit creepy at times, but not too graphic or slasher. If Star Wars and Gremlins are good, Stranger Things would probably be enjoyed and it's several hours worth of entertainment. View Quote |

Hellboy if it has not been already mentioned would be a good one.
Edit to add, Zathura, original Poltergeist, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and last but not least, Beetlejuice. |

A good one I am sure he will like.
Cloak and Dagger....older but good. Flight of the Navigator... again older but good. Really old about a horse.....Tonka by Walt Disney. (when Disney made quality movies.) |

Jumanji. RIP Robin Williams. Club Paradise is good for kids with a few pot references to navigate as a parent. Only issue.
Willow. "You are a great Swordsman" Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade, except the one face-melting scene at the end. I loved Star Wars as a kid, but Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen's charred skeletons still haunt me. Jurassic Park, I guess. I read the book before the movie was made. I was disappointed by the movie. Kids will probably like it. |

Meagan levy is out on dvd, true story about a marine and her dog.

Most of the movie listed (Flight of the Navigator, Neverending Story I (not II), Dark Crystal, Labyrinth) are all good.
H2O Just Add Water is a good series for girls, too. Set in Australia, Queensland/surfer's paradise... it was really enjoyable to hear funny sounding English and see the background scenery. |

Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow
The Great Locomotive Chase Davy Crockett TV show - If you son can handle B&W silent movies, I'd suggest Buster Keaton's The General and Safety Last! Those have adventure and scares. |

Secret of NIHM - cartoon, about rats/mice that live in a farm, using human castoffs
I liked dog movies when I was a kid (and dog books) The incredible journey - two dogs and a cat traverse the wilderness to get back to their family. Live action, narrator tells everything Homeward bound - updated, voiceover for the animals Somewhat similar, the the black stallion Also, not a movie, but the animated series Gargoyles |

I know you said no animated films, but The Secret of NIMH (1982) is a classic adventure kids movie, and a little scary.
The Last Starfighter (1984) is a good live action sci-fi adventure. |

In the US it was called "The Quest" but the original Australian title was "Frog Dreaming." Great adventure film, as far as I remember seeing it as a kid. Some kid goes investigating a mythical swamp monster in the Australian outback.
"The Explorers" was another great one. Kids get weird dreams, and use information from the dreams to build a spaceship. Galaxy Quest was pretty funny, but not sure if kids would like it if they didn't grow up with Star Trek. The Princess Bride is an amazing adventure film. Lots of fun for kids and adults both. Swashbuckling violence. Outlander was a pretty cool "viking from space" movie. Kid-safe. Spaceship crashes in ancient Norway, and space-man joins a local tribe of vikings... but an alien monster tagged along and now they're all fighting for their lives. And he makes a badass sword from alien metal from his crashed spaceship. Disney's The Black Hole was pretty good. Spaceship about to be sucked into a black hole is rescued by a reclusive scientist who lives alone on a space station orbiting a black hole. Hilarity ensues. (Not really) [ETA]Edited in support of Swiss Family Robinson, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the original Johnny Quest series, Enemy Mine, The Never Ending Story, and Secondhand Lions[/edit] |
