Ive got a 11.5" SBR I have for my all purpose shtf, cqb rifle. Looking at an optic for it and am tossing the idea around of a red dot like an eotech vs a decent LPVO. Which would be better all around for something of this purpose. Im leaning towards a red dot and possibly a magnifier since I would assume most contact would be under a couple hundred yards

My SBR’s all have Aimpoints. Everything else has LPVO or irons. That’s just me though.

Lpvo with an offset dot?

I have red dots on everything under 16".

36/300 zero

Could try primary arms new micro prism,
1x for cqb or 3x for help with positive  ID.
I have a steiner on 1 and eotech on the other.
Eotechs are fast but obviously  battery life sucks.

I struggled with this in a go to rifle. I looked at all the high end options. In the end I chose an ACOG TA-33 with an RMR on top.

The more I thought of the LPVO the more I decided that for a realistic SHTF rifle in the Appalachias 3 power would get the job done and at a pound lighter.

My 11.5 started with a LPVO

Then swapped to a eotech with magnifier

Dropped the magnifier. Now sold the eotech. Looking for an ACOG

My 11.5 with LPVO has become my go to rifle for just about everything lately.

The only other AR that I've shot much is my Mk12ish gun for shooting beyond 600 yards.

ETA: Giselle upper with Razor.

Barrel length= red dot

I have a lpvo on my 8.5 so don’t listen to me

I have both, and my LPVO is very high quality. That being said,  I’d get a red dot, it’s just faster. You don’t have to worry about head position as much, eye relief isn’t a concern and battery life is practically infinite. The LPVO sounds good in theory as a do it all optic, and it is great if you only use 1x in a pinch, but a magnifier would serve mostly the same purpose plus you can just remove it if you don’t want the extra weight.

Got some training with a local instructor and had a chance to shoot FBI carbine Qual with my rifles with aimpoint pro and vortex viper PST 1-4. Had both my HD and 3 gun rigs out that day. Not a huge difference in hits or time.

Pick the one you like best and put a few thousand rounds through the setup. Both setups are capable of fast accurate hits to a couple hundred yards.

I went with a red dot and a QD 3x on my 10.5" .300blk SHTF pistol.

Probably depends on where you live.

If I want a do-all rifle it'll be at least 12" and under 16", which makes doing a LPVO - preferably with a dot - a more reasonable choice.

Under 12", red dots.   I really want to see Aimpoint come out with something that has holdover points though rather than ceding ground to Holosun, etc.   ACOG with a piggyback or offset dot is a possible compromise for an SBR.

Red dot is my preference.  No eye box issues, light weight, durable, and the 2 moa dot is plenty fine for bulk FMJ ammo.

I'm going with the 36yd zero on my latest 16" build, for an all around rifle. I got a Burris 1-6, and a small red dot that sits on top of that for up close stuff. With the 36yd zero it should hit within 6" out to 300yds, so with the scope I would never need to dial or hold over under 300 yds. The Burris is MOA SFP, and I think with this zero it will be an interesting solution. Now to get it mounted up and prove myself wrong.

This is almost a get both optic.  3x magnification with pretty good illumination.

My do all started as an 11.3 with an lpvo and rmr piggybacked.

I stretched the barrel out to 12.3 but kept the sighting arrangement.

I really like having magnification available and am willing to accept the weight penalty to keep that ability.

Not at all. I’m thinking a 1-6 or 8 on a 12.5 Grendel for my next rifle.

Eyebox issues for an LPVO are real.

If you don't mind more training time with it to get your head positioning down perfect every time, I would go with an LPVO every time. The red dot is more of a plug and play. It just depends on how much time you're willing to spend behind your optic.

My SBRs all have dots. Everything else has and lpvo or 3x+ optic. I certainly would never build a rifle specifically for cqb.

Mission dictates gear.   If that gun is for close in, you can’t beat a red dot.

If it’s a general purpose 0-300yd gun, I think lpvo is the way to go.

Acog master race. Red chevron works just as fast as a red dot and also get some magnification when needed

I guess I should say its my general home defense, first grab in a bug out/shtf scenario. I live very rural but like I said I also spend time in the city and alot of the time it spends time in a pistol config so I can transport it easier

I had a dot on my 14.5 socom, green mro.
It was good, but I went back to the TR24 green triangle, it’s just to easy to get first round hits out to 300 yards with my old eyes, and 1x is as fast as a dot.
The weight is the only issue.

Weight could be an issue for a long haul. Have a light mounted and I run an AAC can

I started LVPO, went Eotech with mag.

I do have an ACOG but it sits in its case most of the time.

I love lightweight red dots on SBR’s.

I’ve got an MRO, Eotech, Holosun AEMS and a Holosun 507C on my short rifles. Very light, very quick! Almost all of my training classes were done with a 10” ACR with an MRO.

I also have two very nice LVPO’s (Trijicon TR24 and a Razor 1-10) on 16” Recon style rifles. They are also amazing “do it alls”, but with a weight and speed penalty and they also have eye box/parallax issues if shooting from odd positions

Wrestled with the same thing. Currently my 11.5” wears a red dot but I’m really looking to get an acog with piggyback RMR.
