I had an 87 CRX. That was a hoot of a car. It was like sitting on a skateboard.
A couple years later, for whatever reason, my mom got a red '92 Prelude Si for a commuter car. Not exactly a subcompact, and the interior was stupidly tight. But that was a fun thing to drive around the bump and weave roads in northern Kentucky. |

There are other options on the market as mentioned prior.
What I miss is the basic mini trucks. Esp 4 cyl stick shift models Toyota SR5 Pickup Mazda B2000 Nissan Pickup XE (before Frontier) Even the old Ford Ranger and Chevy mini S-10 My Nissan XE just got put out to pasture for parts, blew the head gasket @ 336,### Miles Replaced the water pump @ 220,###. It went through several brake jobs and maybe 4 batteries but was still on the original Alternator. I need to replace it, but there isn't a suitable new option. Older vehicles, the owners want to hold on to them for the same reason so used prices are high when they can be found in great shape. |

I think the toyota celica was a pretty underrated car. Early 2000's GTS models had a redline of 8k IIRC. Both it and scion tc's had a TRD supercharger option that was pretty cool.

Any sportified version of a car would be more expensive in the first place. The Fiesta ST is already in Mazda 3 price ranges and neither are really that much cheaper than what the Focus ST or GTI sell for. When you get to those prices it's hard for some to justify going with the smaller (and often slower) car. View Quote |

I think the Hyundai Elantra gt is a pretty good looking little car.

I love my 03' Mini Cooper S. Around 220-ish hp, 6 speed manual, super quick steering ratio, and handles better than a go-kart. And makes close to 30mpg on the highway.....

I had a min 80's Isuzu Impulse, a little two door turbo job that kind of looked like a VW Scirocco. Overall a decent, sporty little car. It sure would feel like a sub-compact if I tried to get into it today. Same with the Eagle Talon that followed the Isuzu.

I have driven both Fiesta ST and Fiat 500 Abarth. They are both faster than is reasonable for cars that small.

I was never a fan of sub-compacts, compacts were my style.
Two of the most fun cars I ever had were a Miata and a Eclipse GSX (1g) Currently lusting after a WRX STi. |

The first few years The turbos were high 14s, and AWD mid 14s. View Quote I miss my 1g Eclipse GSX. 4G63 Life. I embarrassed many an IROC-Z or Fox. AWD + Turbo = ETA: Mine was exactly like this one.. even down to ~450 hp. Failed To Load Title |

Had a Gen2 CRX Si and Mk 1 GTI (Audi TB, Schrick Cam, Techtonics Exhaust)
- always wanted a FX16 - ugly enough to be cool Attached File Buddy owned Farah's built ST for a whole (maybe still does I can't keep track of the dudes stable) Cool car, but I've moved on |

OP needs to take an Abarth 500 for a spin. It's the closest thing to a heavily modded Mk1 GTI there is. Yes, based on a city car, but it's still waaaay more comfortable than you'd imagine. It's a travesty that VW no longer makes the 2 door GTI. I'm a former VW Scirocco Mk1-Mk2- Corrado- Golf-Golf GT, Alfa Spider-GTV6-Milano, and SAAB 96 owner.

I miss the late 80s and 90s cars in general. The curves, the lack of nanny state, and taking risks of manufacturers from Japan.
It will never happen again. |

OP, I bought this new 2019 Soul Plus this afternoon....I got a decent deal on it or at least as good as I might expect from a dealer. https://inventory-cf.assets-cdk.com/8/9/8/17473698898x640.jpg The Grandkid was in the market for a small used car and since my 2012 Soul Plus was still in nice shape and up to speed maintenance-wise we figured it would be a good 1st car. I let the Grandkid have it for 6K. View Quote @1srelluc |
