VW makes the Polo GTI, but unfortunately it’s not sold here.

I had an 87 CRX.  That was a hoot of a car.  It was like sitting on a skateboard.

A couple years later, for whatever reason, my mom got a red '92 Prelude Si for a commuter car.  Not exactly a subcompact, and the interior was stupidly tight.  But that was a fun thing to drive around the bump and weave roads in northern Kentucky.

There are other options on the market as mentioned prior.

What I miss is the basic mini trucks. Esp 4 cyl stick shift models

Toyota SR5 Pickup
Mazda B2000
Nissan Pickup XE (before Frontier)

Even the old Ford Ranger and Chevy mini S-10

My Nissan XE just got put out to pasture for parts, blew the head gasket @ 336,### Miles Replaced the water pump @ 220,###. It went through several brake jobs and maybe 4 batteries but was still on the original Alternator.

I need to replace it, but there isn't a suitable new option. Older vehicles, the owners want to hold on to them for the same reason so used prices are high when they can be found in great shape.

Well Ford is designing a new Courier that might come to the states so we'll see if we will get a small

Neat, kinda crazy they managed to fit a 2 L in that small thing, that has to be one cramped engine bay

I think the toyota celica was a pretty underrated car. Early 2000's GTS models had a redline of 8k IIRC. Both it and scion tc's had a TRD supercharger option that was pretty cool.

Larger Displacement doesn’t mean it’s physically large. A Honda b16 vs b20 is just a little difference in height. A 427ci Chevy LSX is the same physical size as a 4.8l and both are way smaller than a 5.0 coyote

Any sportified version of a car would be more expensive in the first place. The Fiesta ST is already in Mazda 3 price ranges and neither are really that much cheaper than what the Focus ST or GTI sell for. When you get to those prices it's hard for some to justify going with the smaller (and often slower) car.

Power to weight ratio. (Fiesta vs Focus when I was looking at both and a few upgrades). I know nothing about the GTI.

Well of course but the polo typically has 1L 3 cylinder engines in it, that should tell you what the engine bay is more optimized for

But that's a compact, many people that have posted in this the thread posted compact car examples not SUB compact cars

A subcompact is in between a compact and a city car

B segment as the Europeans call it

Toyota seriously screwed up not putting the GTS’s 2ZZ in the Spyder. Another couple hundred bucks per car would have given it identical power:weight to the S2000 and wouldn’t have been an oil burner. That was just plain dumb.

I had a min 80's Isuzu Impulse, a little two door turbo job that kind of looked like a VW Scirocco.  Overall a decent, sporty little car.  It sure would feel like a sub-compact if I tried to get into it today.  Same with the Eagle Talon that followed the Isuzu.

Were these small enough to count?

Compared to say, a 1990 IROC or Mustang GT,
They gave up some hp to the top models,
But weighed maybe 10% less.

The first few years The turbos were high 14s, and AWD mid 14s.

I was never a fan of sub-compacts, compacts were my style.

Two of the most fun cars I ever had were a Miata and a Eclipse GSX (1g)

Currently lusting after a WRX STi.

AWD + Turbo =

They are definitely going away. The newly redesigned Fiesta is already out in the rest of the world while we are still getting the last generation. I would expect that 2019 is the last year for all of these, but at the very least we won't be seeing any new generations of them in the states if they continue down their current path.

I can agree with that.  Driving a sub compact rental car feels like getting into a clown car despite my daily driver being a GTI.  The GTI certainly isnt big, but I can comfortably wear a helmet in mine despite being 6'5".

OP needs to take an Abarth 500 for a spin. It's the closest thing to a heavily modded Mk1 GTI there is. Yes, based on a city car, but it's still waaaay more comfortable than you'd imagine. It's a travesty that VW no longer makes the 2 door GTI. I'm a former VW Scirocco Mk1-Mk2- Corrado- Golf-Golf GT, Alfa Spider-GTV6-Milano, and SAAB 96 owner.

OP, I bought this new 2019 Soul Plus this afternoon....I got a decent deal on it or at least as good as I might expect from a dealer.

The Grandkid was in the market for a small used car and since my 2012 Soul Plus was still in nice shape and up to speed maintenance-wise we figured it would be a good 1st car. I let the Grandkid have it for 6K.
