The camo one belongs to me View Quote If you do have a source for kits, I may be PM-ing you in the near future. Looking to do a second Rhodie build once I have enough saved up. Just looking and I couldn't find a damn thing, not even on the FalFiles. I doubt I'll be able to pay $220 again like I did a couple of years ago for my first build. |

Any one know a source for Rhodesian camo? Original or reproduction. You will pay a shitload for original, on the order of a few hundred dollars per item last I saw... Very collectible... Don't know anywhere that makes decent repros. The Trident stuff wasn't bad. The colours and pattern were correct and the cuts were generally pretty accurate, but they took a shortcut on the buttons (which suck and aren't like those on the originals). As far as I know they don't have any and are shady to do business with these days. There's a guy on the New Rhodesian Forum who did a run or two of Rhodie camouflage and I heard it was very accurate, and he took apart originals and examined their colouring directly in order to make the uniforms. I think there's another guy intending to make a similar run soon. There's another company that started to make them, but I don't know how accurate they are going to be. Most stuff tends to either use incorrect colours, an inaccurate pattern, an incorrect cut for the uniforms (and sometimes shoddy work and materials), or some combination thereof. There is also stuff meant to look kind of like it but that isn't correct, as well as some similar patterns that are incorrectly advertised as Rhodesian (such as one of the Pakistani patterns). Zimbabwe's current uniforms are off on the colours and slightly off on the pattern, and the cut of the uniforms is slightly different as well. Not the most readily available uniform items to acquire (although Zimbabwe is also reissuing old Rhodesian stock uniforms as well). I personally would also like to see the dry season version and perhaps something for wetter seasons, using the colour change used by Zimbabwe, which in the early '80s retained the colours of Rhodesian camo and just changed to a lizard-stripe pattern. Their dry season camo used the Rhodesian colours while their wet season was green dominant by replacing the khaki background with a pale green one. On the Rhodesian dry season, the green parts of the standard pattern were replaced by a yellow-ish colour similar to that of dead grass; a pic of it was posted earlier in the thread. |

Great pics! I wear what some would call "nut huggers" quite a bit. Even in the woods, but not while sawing. They're from Cabelas and I believe they're called safari shorts or hiking shorts. I like the 5.5" inseam much better than the ghetto shorts hanging below the knee. Capstick used to wear shorts exclusively as well and even wrote some on the reasoning. If I had some time I'd look it up. View Quote I would really appreciate it. Do you remember what book it was in? |

I've met David Scott Donelan, attended one of the TTOS schools when he was the CEO. You've never lived until you break bread at the Cracker Barrel wit ha member of the Selous Scouts. His book "Tactical Tracking Operations" centers on the fundamentals of combat tracking, but it also contains a lot of his stories.

An interesting story to add to this from my mums time in Zambia. When she was a kid her and her friends would play along a rural road close to where my mum lived. There was a training camp for terrorists(Not sure if it was ZAPU but judging from the research I've done it's most likely ZAPU under Joshua Nkomo) It could have been earlier then that. There was a make shift guard post and any time they got too close the guard in question would look at them rather angrily and shew them away.
She had some friends who served in the army who died along the Zambezi Valley in the late 60's(69 I believe) I've asked her about Zambia's involvement with the conflict against Rhodesia and her answer was simply that "Even if not directly involved they had to help their African brothers in arms(Hence training camps)......It was just the thinking." Zambia as a whole at least when she was there for the most part was very peaceful. |

HiramRanger and anbbna, you've got mail.
Rhodesia: Tactical Victory, Strategic Defeat Pretty solid report from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College. "Tropes of the Cold War: Jimmy Carter and Rhodesia" is a really good read that I have saved on my computer but can't find a free version online. I also just found this rather scathing read, "DID JIMMY CARTER’S CIA STING DESTROY A COLD WAR ALLY?" |

Not too far from where her and her friends would play there was a terrorist training camp. The general attitude was "You leave them alone they leave you alone." They got too close one time and got scared off by a terrorist guard. She lost some very close friends along the Zambezi Valley who were in the RLI in the late 60's. She lived in Zambia till the late 70's.

How could the USA look at what the Soviets were throwing into that fight and not be at all concerned? I mean you'd think at least the CIA would have helped them out through third parties like the South Africans or something.
