I think this is the 4th ot 5th time the Russians were running out of artillery shells  That was first reported around the May/June timeframe.

I did a quick calculation on 1989 numbers of artillery systems the Russians had on hand. Then estimated based on the same ratio of guns to shells based on US ratios.  It came out that the Russians had enough ammunition for 1000 guns to fire 50 shells each day for 5 years

We were told that the Ruble was ready to collapse months ago.

The missile were supposed to be almost gone also.

The US would have a very hard time in a chemical environment. I remember in 2003 we were really worried about Sadam following Soviet doctrine, and sliming the airbases.
We trained a lot, we carried full mop gear everywhere, and had stockpiles of decon vehicles and chemicals.
It would have been a shit show, and besides the Israelis, we were probably the best trained for it.

The U.S. Is trained and equiped well enough to handle an NBC environment.  My unit 4/32nd Armor (m1A1's) pulled gate guard at the ports in Saudi Arabia for a couple of weeks while we awaited our tanks to arrive from Germany during Desert Shield/Desert Storm.  Saddam launched a handful of scuds at the port most nights of the week.  We were in MOPP 4 all of the time.  Sleeping in MOPP 4.  Thankfully all the scuds were conventional, so the damage done was through HE.  Still did damage to the ports every night.  The Patriots did well intercepting the Scuds, but then only broke them in half to still fall and blow-up.  We were MOPP 2 and sometimes MOPP 4 during the ground offensive.  I was later exposed to sarin nerve agent at the Wadi Albatein.
We were in MOPP 2 and MOPP 4 quite a bit again in 2003-04.

Saying "we installed him in 2014" when he was clearly elected with 73% of the vote in 2019, yea, seriously doubt your opinion on related matters.

Nothing about that is me "believing that propaganda!" I am neutral on Zelensky other than acknowledging the fact he is doing everything he can to provide his military commanders with the tools they need to defend their country.

On a side note I hope this war has re-taught a lesson to western powers that stockpiles are incredibly important which was painfully learned from the first year of ww1, becuase as I thought all throughout the cold war we did not have nearly enough stored to fight more than a few years in a hot cold but I admit with nukes being thrown around I might not have mattered.

The USSR had stockpiles of munitions to send a multi million man army with tens of thousands of artillery pieces against NATO and push to the French coast, and mop up pockets of resistance. What the hell makes people think they threw them away? They still have T-34s in storage for Christ's sake. Sure, they didn't make enough of their new "super" weapons, but simple artillery shells? Puh-lease. You stack them up in dry caves, bunkers and warehouses. Look at how many mosins were still coming out of Russia 10 years ago. The Russians aren't going to run out of ammo, men, artillery pieces, guns, or tanks. They aren't going to be the tip of the spear stuff, but they aren't going to run out fighting a small war like the Ukraine when they were planning for armies of millions fighting millions.

I think folks just don't appreciate how deep the cold war stockpiles got of things like munitions.

The amounts of stuff that just ended up in places like Iraq should tell people if they are going to run out of anything it won't be conventional explosives.

OP's thesis is vague. Do they have less? Sure. Are they 'lower'? Probably. Are they 'low'? Pretty imprecise metric.

If they have less than a month supply, that's 'low'. If they have < 20% of what they started with, 'low'.

Just because some CIA operative told a journalist in a bar they are 'low' doesn't mean they are low. It probably means the the CIA wants a Congress Critter to read that in the NYT, think 'That's authoritative, I better vote $45B for UKR to finish this off.'

I'm always amazed when news outlets give us military info. 99% it's the DoD or CIA planting stories to manipulate public and elected government opinion. I don't think the American media has a dozen people in the actually UKR war zone. The possibility of the media getting real Russian supply info is nil - candidly, Putin doesn't have that info, Russia is so F****D Up.

Many of China long in use weaponry is simply incompatible with Russian stuff.

Just look at the mainline rifle ammo, Russia uses 5.45x39 while China uses 5.8x42mm

And it's not like they will retool for a nation they want revenge on for the 1860s treatises where Russia took a chunk of their land.

As long as we keep giving Ukraine top end stuff and they are willing to fight they are seemingly well on there way to push Russia out two years from now with there ridiculous KTDR

It all hinges on what Russia will do when they are pushed out

Will Russia white peace out? Or keep fighting and cause true Armageddon to their country? Perhaps not even nukes can save them in the long run of human history

No matter what they do they have destroyed their nation for centuries to come with this war.

I can forsee Russia being further cut up into smaller countries or turn into a place just as bad as North Korea.

Will be interesting to witness.

Not the person you asked, but here is how I see this playing out.

Attrition is on Ukraine's side. Russia's troops are increasingly poorly trained and poorly equipped. We have numerous reports that Russia's conscripts are being sent into the field with only a week or two of training.

Russia's running low on equipment - hence the cannibalization of some of their nuclear missiles as decoys, the increasing reliance on Iranian drones, and fielding outdated vehicles like T-62s. Wear and tear is also a factor - we have Russian sources indicating that tanks are increasingly being used as essentially static artillery pieces due to better ammunition availability for them. Tanks are not meant for that kind of sustained round count, and will wear them out.

Russia has been unable to make meaningful progress anywhere in months, and has seen two major fronts collapse.

Ukraine continues to receive western arms that are far newer and more capable than what Russia is dragging out of storage. They also have tens of thousands of troops receiving proper expert training in the UK and other NATO countries.

For the past few months, initiative has shifted in Ukraine's favor, and the supply and logistics picture suggests this is unlikely to shift back towards Russia. In other words, time is on Ukraine's side.

Geography is also a factor. The crown jewel of the areas Russia is occupying is Crimea. It will be very difficult for Russia to supply it if Ukraine retakes a few more areas.

They are very clearly running low on the front. Why that is is likely a combination of factors. Every source has demonstrated a marked reduction in fire from the Russian side over time. They also seem to be using tanks for indirect fire support.

My guess is a lot of it has to do with logistics, specifically Ukraine’s intelligence capability that allows it to HIMARS any concentration of anything approaching the front. The whole Russian rear is full of smartphones feeding intelligence to Ukraine, western intelligence is feeding info, etc.

On the topic of artillery shells and munitions, if Russia wasn’t running low, then they wouldn’t be purchasing shells from North Korea and other countries.  But yet it is, meaning, they can’t supply the war with their own stockpiles.  Secondly, where do you think all of the Munitions that have been found all over the world in the various conflicts in Africa and the Middle East came from?  I’m sure the Soviets had ungodly amounts of munitions stored up during the Cold War but a ton of that stuff got sold off to other countries or went out the back door by corrupt generals back in the 90s and early 2000s.  So doing an analysis of what they might’ve had in 1989 and trying to assume that that would make sense today doesn’t really line up.

The "escape route" for the Russians troops to pull out of Ukraine is still pretty wide open.

(Except for the Russian internal security troops & blocking forces and that pesky penalty they would face for "Desertion in time of war  Special Military Operation".)

Putin could end the war tomorrow if he pulled ALL the Russian troops out of ALL the Ukrainian territory the Russians occupy.
