I had no idea that these were so huge! I've liked military aviation since I was a kid, but don't keep up. I've been around F4's and other older U.S. jets, but this Russkie plane seems bigger than a WWII medium bomber to me.

Wow, and I thought the F-22 was big...

Edit: Did you see the 34 in Texas? My wife and I were driving to the beach a few years ago and went past a base that had more Mig-29s than F-18s (as far as we could see). It just felt weird to see so many Russian fighter jets in SC. Why are there so many stateside?

I've always thought the F-14 was big, but the SU-34 is a full 14 feet longer.

SU-34 is 76 feet long and 48 feet wingtip to wingtip.

F-14A is 62 feet long and 64 feet wingtip to wingtip when fully extended.

it is impressive looking.

I remember reading years back(I think before the "Superbug", or maybe it was still on paper) one of the aviation publications articles advocating buying Su-27 air frames(our electronics/engines) to fill the gap until a new design came online for replacement as the F-14's and Intruders were going away... becasue the air frame was huge and capable, and could haul alotta fuel/ordnance.

basically they thought the F-18 was too small and short legged to fill those various roles... dunno how it's doing , I guess everyone around here seems satisfied.

I grabbed the pic off a NYT article about Russia's current military capabilities on display in Syria.

It's supposed to eventually replace the SU-24, which is the Soviet version of the F-111.

Its like a mini B-1 bomber. Built for long duration and comfort. Has a toilet in the back and you can stand up in the cockpit to stretch out for long missions. It flies and handles just like a regular fighter jet.

*Edited toilet pic out wrong pic.

Cheap too.

Seems like just the thing for Australians to replace the F111, being as how they got shafted on not getting F22s.

The Fullback is my favorite Russian airplane, but it really is not a very good plane.

No internal stores and so far the Russian MoD has released no videos of it using PGMs.  Which is a bit surprising.  It's Russias premier and brand new medium range bomber

The US bought up lots of Soviet aircraft after it USSR broke up- better to be on static display here in the states than in the hands of bad guys.

Looking at that pic makes me think of how awful it would be to have to eject - until the chute opens, of course.)  I don't know why this pic made me think of that.  I've seen plenty of smaller cockpits, and never got that weird feeling.

Well lotsa luck with it against anything other then 3rd world targets. The thing must look like a house on radar I dont care what the Russians say about reducing its RCS. You cant "reduce" a design.

If they ever had to go up against a country with a decent air defense I think they'd get their butts kicked. But seeing as how Air Forces mostly bomb those without defenses maybe the Russians are on to something.

I thought the entire cockpit was boosted away from the air frame like in the B-1.

Nope I'm wrong. There seems to be lots of pictures and videos of successful SU34 ejections
