The Conjuring scared the hell out of my wife when she saw it in theaters.  I didn't know how bad till several months after she saw it.   We were going through a haunted house attraction in Gatlinburg and at one quiet and dark area....I did the *clap clap* thing behind her. I still have a scar on my shin from where she kicked me for that one.

I assume Hereditary has already been mentioned?

And not really super scary, but The Witch or (VVitch) had great cinematography and an excellent spooky vibe.

We have been watching all of the Warren films (Conjuring, Annabelle, etc.) this past week. As others have said, they are family friendly and not overly gorey.
Ed and Lorraine are just hokey enough to take the edge off of the movies and give comic relief. I've got a thing for Vera Farmiga, so that helps as well.

Most of my favorites have already been addressed so I'll add "It Follows". It's not super scary but I just really enjoyed the plot line. Really good flick worth checking out. I remember thinking the beginning seemed kinda dumb at first but then I got into it really quick.

Annabelle. My daughter and I saw it when it first hit the theater. We both loved it. My wife won’t watch scary stuff so it’s just the kid and me.

So, none of the good stuff. I’m pretty sure Charlie Brown has a Halloween Special.

Why do millennials refer to horror movies as "scary" movies.  My wife fist noticed this around 10 years ago from her students and I've seen it ever since.  Is it because of those comedy movies "Scary Movie"?

OP, if you're looking for something that isn't too gory/violent/rapey you could try Pumpkinhead or Dolls.

My wife doesn’t do scary movies, so I watched it by myself with al the lights off while she was traveling for business. It’s not a classical horror film, but with the right ambiance it’ll do the trick

Also just a really good movie.

Session 9. Still haunting to me for many reasons.

M. Night Shyamalan's earlier movies, especially The Sixth Sense and Signs, are very tense and atmospheric.

While a good flick I wouldn't suggest that for the OP's daughter if he wants her to sleep again

Is stick to PG-13 movies for now knowing the OP's daughter.

It's a little uneven but Burnt Offerings is fairly good.  No gore, kinda a ghost story.  The hearse driver freaked 12 year old me out.  One of Betty Davis' last roles also.  Made back in the 70's?  I think?
