A tractor, similar to a lot of tools, depends on a good operator to stay in decent shape.  Your new partners in this endeavor may be the type that really abuse things and there you are hold half the bill.  Oh, and a new place will need it a lot more.  Thanks for chipping in 50% for that too.

I’m unhappy enough when the wife uses one of ours.  She’s probably 10% of the hours and 50% of the wear and tear.

If it moves, most people will tear it up. Who repairs it? Who maintains it?

Explain your reluctance: that it's YOUR equipment and that you don't want to ruin a relationship by having blurred lines of ownership and responsibility.

Having said that, discuss letting him borrow it, at an hourly rate commensurate with use/maintenance/loss of value. (Talk to a rental agency or the kubota dealer if you can't figure a decent hourly rate based on your own experience.) Family is family.

Discuss how this is only going to happen as long as the equipment is returned in a condition that is as good as, or better than, when you left it.

Open comms. Man up and explain where you're coming from.

It seems like a good idea. . . Until it isn't. I don't use mine often,  but I know how it is treated when I do. Also, if you don't use it much, but they have a lot of work to do, then it wouldn't be anywhere near 50-50 on the usage and therefore the upkeep and repair. You could prorate everything, but at that point, it would probably make sense for him to just buy one anyway.

Maybe if you write up a contract where they are basically leasing to own and their only out is buying you out, all of which you price so that at then end you can afford a new tractor.

Otherwise, no.

It could work .

There are a dozen reasons why it goes from a pain in the ass all the way to a family feud that costs a huge pile of money.

I would avoid the whole mess

They "have a lot of land to clear" you say?  And they want to do it with your 2016 low hours tractor?  What could possibly go wrong?

You'll both be far better off if he hires someone with the right equipment to do that.

On the other hand, you could just go for it.  Get your camera ready and report back with video.

With that cash, just buy a second tractor, leaving enough room for another couple implements that he owns, and/or hire the heaviest work out to someone with an excavator, skid steer, dozer, and or backhoe.

eta- I don't know what experience they have with equipment, but if they're like a lot of people they'll tear that little tractor to pieces trying to clear land. Even best case on their skills and temperament, that's not the right machine for clearing.

Just looked up what size the 4060 is. I'm with most others in this thread. Heck no. That tractor is suitable for small acreage maintenance. Not land clearing and such.

I had a new neighbor ask to borrow my Sthil equipment for clearing some trees and brush. I told him the same thing. "I'll gladly help, I don't loan tools out"
I did too. Busted my ass helping him out and he appreciated it.

No way.  They probably have no experience running equipment and when they destroy your tractor you're stuck fixing it.  On top of that its a PITA just to get the parts to fix stuff right now.

Sounds like a terrible idea to me.  When he breaks something clearing land will be the first test.  It's a pretty small tractor but I would assume just regular maintenance can add up as well, especially clearing land with something this small.  Will they be helping with that?

I have done this with attachments, but not a tractor.

Depending on what they are doing with the land, a 40 horse tractor should be enough.

You can get those for around 20-25k.

If you did choose to sell an interest in your tractor, make sure you have a contract drafted listing very specifically all details.

This, my son wanted to update my tractor with a newer one and he’d pay half. I told him pretty much that. You will end up doing all maintainance, paying for consumables, your attachments will come back needing repair and you will hear “it was like that when I got it” or some variation of that.

OP as they say, if you have a doubt, then there is no doubt.

We have an M7060 which is barely enough tractor for clearing land. It has 300hr on it but the FEL and canopy make it look like it has 3000hr on it.  no way would I use an L model for land clearing. That really needs to be reserved for a Cat D4 and a mini ex.

If they were tedding hay 3x a yr and putting 20hr a year, sure. But bush-hogging an unknown farm, clearing land? Absolutely not.

My dad and a good friend and neighbor bought a tractor together when I was young. he had the room in a barn for it so it was stored at his place. Anytime dad needed it other guy always said he had to have it that day. The guy also destroyed the shit out of all attachments.  I know my dad was always annoyed with the situation for all the more he needed it to brush hog. I wouldn’t do it. Nor would I loan attachments. I was always amazed with the amount of things this guy mashed with a 6ft rotary cutter.  Some people are just hard on shit. I like to take care of my stuff. If a (good) friend wants to borrow my tractor I always just go do the work with it.

And a disproportionately high number of them are people who aren't paying for the machine OR repairs when they fuck it up.

Friend of a friend deal, but friend loaned his tractor and rear mount tiller to his friend to till his garden.  Dude tilled up the garden, then tilled his 1/4 mile white rock driveway to "smooth it out"...

YMMV.

Several small areas fenced off for years that need the fencing removed and the trees and brush that grew there removed along the fence lines. I figure around 1600 feet of fencing needs to be removed and cleared and an acre or so of scrub brush.

What are they going to do when you break their tractor?

And vice versa.

The level of "Oh Fuck NO!" on this is even greater than sharing an airplane or boat because tractors are intended to be used to break shit and are often broken themselves while being used for their intended purpose.

These rarely turn out well.

It eventually will break and will require maintenance. Roulette on who is using it at the time and how it gets paid for.

Im tool and machinery heavy and dont lend anything out(or borrow anything)

FPNI once again.

They'll break shit, mistreat it, and expect you to fix it.

Unless you KNOW, and I mean 100% KNOW that they are not that type.

Even if they aren't that type, the problem with them "buying in" as they'll pay you half, likely put much more than half of the wear and tear on the tractor, and then expect you to "split" costs with them.   What if you both need it at the same time?  They've "bought" half, so in their minds, they will be just as entitled to use it as you are.

Owning anything with anyone else is always a bad idea.
