A rag to wrap around the face, especially the mouth and nose during a sandstorm, has been a good idea for thousands of years.

It's just that here in the free world we have been using bandanas and neckerchiefs because for the most part we have hats.

Our US government should have been smarter and given our troops bandanas of brown and tan  for use over there, as it was apparently most soldiers bought locally which of course meant Shemaghs.

Probably is a good idea to skip the classic red bandana, but something like this (maybe with the patterned part being tan or very dark green) would have been a good idea

It's my understanding that the patterns on the Shemaghs are culturally significant, different patterns for different clans/regions/groups, so I am sure there were some times when locals were pissed off when the troops were wearing THEIR pattern when clearly not one of THEM.   The 'classic western' bandana pattern would then be a boon.

The reason started with SF guys who wore them to blend in better. My first deployment, most people just used Cravat Bandages or a bandana if they were gunning.

Shemanghs is what Brits call them and how the term entered the US military vernacular; Arabs generally call them keffiyehs

I have one, sometimes I wear it, and I don't give a fuck what anyone thinks!

Been wearing it for 10 + years

Good in the morning to keep me warm

Good in the afternoon to keep me from getting burnt

I blow my nose with them

Good for keeping dirt out of your face in sand and dust storms which believe it or not I have utilized my shemagh for that purpose more than once

Dozens of of other uses I have yet to utilize it for

I wear mine in the winter because it's warm, and since it's legit (got it from a dead hajji) it pisses off all the Arabic immigrants when I go downtown.

I would have preferred one to a GI towel in VN.
