I woke up with a hankering for pancakes but no maple syrup in the house. All the stores are closed (I think) and the only all night diner is Denny's.
While was trying to summon the energy to go I fiddled around on a local gunstore's website. I've almost bought a new mini 3-4 times since I left NY. The mini is like a stripper with thick glasses I saw in a strip club next to a trailer park. I mean I sort of like the idea, it's okay from certain angles but I know it's no good. I had a 30 and it was not only horribly inaccurate but the charging handle rattled as you walked around in the woods. I traded it and a 870 I took in for trade that smelled so bad of cigarette smoke I had to leave it outside locked in a truck for a Glock 19 and a bunch of pre ban mags-great deal. I later bought a mini 14 post safe act that I resold for what I paid for it. I saw a 30 this week but walked away. Then I found mini tacticals back in stock along with the foldy stock at another store. I can't even blame Arfcom. For all the boomer jokes here there are few mini fans, heck I started a thread making fun of a guy with a mini last week. Minis are like pump action "fighting" shotguns. I know they're no good but here I am . |

Good luck, but my experience was bad with two of them. Being a Garand and M14 guy there is no rifle I wanted to love more than the Mini 14.
Both of my rifles were the newer 5.56 “Tactical”‘models with the heavier barrel. The first was so bad in the accuracy department after a trip back for a warranty repair Ruger replaced it with a new one. The replacement rifle had both terrible accuracy and functioning problems. You are right, pancakes were a better choice. |

I had one back when mags for it were impossible to find. I ended up getting a usa mag or some such that ejected the fired round and the one below it with every shot so it was a 30 round capacity, 15 shot mag.
I understand the allure. She looks nice but just spends your money and you get nothing out of it. If the accuracy was acceptable, I'd have one. Last test I was was around 6moa. That's shotgun territory. |

Don't worry, Aimless. There have been a LOT of relapse threads on Arfcom lately.
You'll earn your chip yet! One day at a time!!! |

The only reason I think they are cool is because I loved watching A-Team as a teen. Yeah, those were AC556’s, but a Mini-14 variant nonetheless. I would never own one, but they are fun to look at because of the nostalgia.

So l, did you get one? You should tapco it if so. For old times sake.

Thinking back to when you were a younger bird with tiny flippers, what tasted best, the red or the blue paint chips?

You finally have the freedom to buy any kind of gun you want, and this is what you do with it.

Great concept, but marginal execution is about how you summed it up years ago and I think that’s correct.
So much potential, but for years Ruger was content to produce and market a rifle that didn’t live up to expectations and one has to ask “why?” |

Ambien walrus?
Don't feel bad OP, I walked in for ammo and left with a Glock 48 and Sig P238. First Glock in 5 years, after I jumped on the M&P train. Oops happens. |

I feel your pain, Aimless….since the late 1970s…
The Mini14, superficially at least, implies the M1 carbine—but in 5.56….and the wood & steel appeals to my Boomer expectation of a rifle—not “plastic fantastic” not “combat Tupperware,” nor even the “Mattel 16….” Yet it has never delivered, IME in at least 6 purchases. I still have one & a bunch of factory mags. It’s certainly reliable & seldom (if ever) has jammed, but it’s more AK accuracy than AR, so not that different from my M1 carbine. It’s like anything—there’s the expectation of what you hope & dream it will be—then there’s the reality of what it is, warts et al……but I always find myself with the HOPE “Ruger got it better one this one….” It also reminds me of how The Left thinks “Socialism will work THIS time…..” Ironic, no? Never cared for Denny’s though….I’ll skip eating before stopping there for chow. I always expect a cigarette butt in my scrambled eggs, based on the waitstaff in the 2 or 3 I’ve stopped at….not my thing. |

The last time I owned a Mini-14 Bill Clinton was president.
Still have the Mini-30. |
|
I bought a stainless GB folder model Mini14 years ago off of a guy that needed fast cash. $200 with 6 stainless Ruger mags.
During the Clinton Ban, I sold the Mini for $1200 with 1 mag. Sold the other 5 mags for $100 each. It was acrually a good shooting rifle. Started to send it off to Accuracy Speaks before I ended up selling it. |

I put a CHOATE folding stock and A2 style flash suppressor on it got some reliable 30 round mags, hung it on the wall of my bedroom My Evil stepmother had a fit ran to my Dad bitching a fit My old man laughed I sold it when I joined the Army. I worried that CUNT would throw it in a dumpster …..I want it back for sentimental reasons Attached File Attached File |

Once you have all the Glocks and 1911's and AR's a mans true character is revealed in the stupid guns he buys.
Mini 14's, trade in 870's, old Smith wheel guns or 3rd gen autos and maybe the odd SKS, M1A or lever gun. All signs of a man's maturity and understanding that sometimes you just buy a stupid gun because you want it. |
|
Imagine buying a crappy .223 for the same money a M1 Garand goes for.
|
|
I wish I had kept mine, it got sold 30 years ago to fund my first AR.
It just worked and had fair accuracy. |

I probably had four or five including a Mini-30.
Main problem back then was lack of factory mags and accuracy. Can't imagine having nostalgia for an inferior tool... But that's just like my opinion man... |

|
You traded a Mini-30 AND a Remy 870 for a G19?
What else ya got? |
|
Glad I went to IHOP yesterday instead of Denny's and had French Toast instead of pancakes.
My gun safe is already stuffed. |
