Lugers were thought to be too expensive to produce @$38. back in the 30's.

That's from my poor memory of a Forgotten Weapons episode.

That would be roughly $624.18 today

and, in terms of a military issue handgun, that would be an extremely high cost to manufacture.

Only if using the bullshit inflation numbers put out by .gov.

In reality it would be much, much higher than that.

Aimco in Houston Texas made the 1990s Stoeger and Mitchell arms Lugers.  I didn't think the price was horrible at the time but their reputation was spotty.  At least that was the impression I got.  I'd still buy one if I found one.

I wonder if their tooling still exists somewhere?

And that would pretty much be a Beretta m 9.

Modernized p38 that is.

I don't think the design of the Luger is compatible with "affordable" given modern techniques.

But whether or not it's feasible...  it's not like we don't have more important things to worry about lately.

Beautifully made pistols, but a clear dead end of self loading development.

Yes, I have one.

Luger took the Borchardt C-93 and redesigned to be more sensible

when he finished, the Luger was good to go with little to no improvements needed

that’s a good design

….for its time

There is one, the Walther P5 (also out of production now though)

It is a neat gun and fun to shoot.

That's the reason, combined with the fact that demand would NOT be very high.  The Luger is a neat design, but it's obviously not practical as a modern gun, so the people who value it for the nostalgia will still want an old/original one.

I do remember seeing a mock-up (or CGI?) of a "modern" Luger, which looked pretty badass.  Someone will probably post it.

Not practical? How so? The shorter-barrelled Lugers would make excellent carry guns. Not a lot of bulk.

A new Luger made today would cost at least $4000.

Chinaman could make one in S35VN in full polish with natural G10 grip scales and throw in a couple magazines a flashlight, 3 USB cables and a satin pouch with an entertaining owners manual and make money on it for $375

Like all historic guns people want to bring back it will suffer from being far too expensive for casual shooters to want to buy them, and them having no value for collectors.  That makes the actual market for such a gun extremely small, since 90% of those people who say they want one will not buy one.

As already mentioned, it would be too expensive to manufacture. Guns in the Luger’s day, and the Luger in particular, needed a lot of really precise machine work done by hand. Remember, the Wehrmacht didn’t replace the Luger because it was a bad gun or they didn’t like it, it was just too expensive in comparison to other short recoil automatic pistols.

3D printing could and probably will eventually make reproductions of guns like that more economically viable.

I don't want to be anywhere near someone touching off a cartridge in a 3D printed gun.  MIM has a bad enough rep.

I said “eventually” metal 3D printing is absolutely the future of industrial manufacturing.

As was said of sintered metal firearms, adn MIM parts.   3 D printing is not going to replicate the metallic grain structure of either quality investment casting or forging, or even milling form billets.  That's before we consider things like heat-treatment and such.

I have one of the East German rebuild P08s that came in about 1993.

It's a lot of fun to shoot, reliable enough for a range toy, and it's the only gun I have that people actually approach me at the range wanting to check it out.

Of course I let them shoot a mag.

Important to remember that build cost is only part of what goes into a gun. Glocks cost under $100 to build but you don't see them going for anywhere near that.

But skilled machinist work and hand-fitting are far more expansive now compared to nearly a century ago, so the build cost on a Luger is actually far more than inflation conversion implies.

This is my Stoeger I bought new way back when.  It runs very well, likes hotter ammo and if you can get past the small sights, it is fairly accurate.

The reason they did not sell well, back then you could buy a real Luger for less.  At one time buying a real Luger was not that difficult.

They made a navy model, but I never could find one.  I also have a couple of their .22's
