When it left the showroom floor it was a Cadillac El Dorado, one of the coolest cars ever made.   I don't know what it is now.  Maybe it's a statement about the decay of urban culture.

I remember (the original) whitewalls,, but I don't recall ever hearing them called "gangster whitewalls".

It must be a term which was invented later.

You understand that whitewalls varied in size over the years, right? There is no "regular size".

And thus the terms "Gangster Walls" and "Gangster Tires" was born.  Nice looking Packard, BTW.  Any .45cal bullet  holes found in it when you restored it?

Nice Packard for sure Slug-O.  You need to get yourself some year correct metal side mount covers, though it looks good w/o them.
Club sedan (shortest four door), if I remember.  Is that a Super Eight?  Can't read the wheel caps with these eyes.

Yes, driving through North Chicago/Waukegan IL in the 1970's, yes, there were a lot of Caddys and other cars with the wide whites, and wire (spoked) wheels.

My parents had the Packard painted 30 years ago. The inside is original.

Wow, that really looks fantastic all around.  The early 1930's models are in the highest demand, and yours shows why.
I've been a member of two Packard clubs for twenty five years, but I still don't own one.  Kind of dumb I guess.  Maybe some day.  Packard dreams, but Ford money.

Wide whites made a comeback here some years back. There was a local tire shop that had a machine that would "cut" them on white wall tires to make them bigger. I assume it just removed enough sidewall to expose more of the white layer.

My black friend still loves whitewalls, even on his ford fusion. I tried to talk some sense into him. It didn't work.
