Who knowingly plants this crap on their property?

Not exaggerating - they dump tree shlt of one kind of another 12 months out of the year

Really cool trees though. I guess easy for me to say since I don’t have any.

We had one beside the carport of the house I grew up in.  The steps into the house were in the corner of the carport.
The leaves would be knee deep where they collected in that corner.

A big coon would lay out on a limb in that tree in the sun.

They make beautiful lumber. Even more beautiful when its spalted.

They're neat looking but messy and they make you cough when you cut them.

I have 3 massive ones in my backyard. I love the shade, squirrels that live in the knot holes, and noise-dampening. The leaves don't even bother me that much.
I hate the seed pods that explode and stick seeds to everything, especially my gutters. I also hate the giant branches they drop, one of which skewered my deck this year.

I'll take that over a Magnolia.
Link Posted: 12/10/2022 2:50:42 PM EDT

My magnolia says "here, hold my beer".

Sheds stiff leaves year round, not to mention the seed pods which can be a tripping hazard and almost as dangerous s hitting rock with a lawnmower.

I hate that tree with a purple passion.

My favorite tree.  The London Plane hybrid is often planted in cities because they're smog and drought tolerant, but true sycamores tend to like riverbanks.

Grew up with two of those fuckers.

Now I've just got a 200 year old oak that dumps all its shit at once.

Pin oak leaves are small, dense, and find every single crevasse in your vehicles. I do enjoy the shade in the summer though. All trees have their pluses and minuses. I guess live in the desert if the minuses are too much for you.

While they make great shade trees

Do NOT plant them close to the house

Kansas wind is good at breaking off large limbs

And an early snowfall/ice storm will weight down
The leaves and limbs. Neighbor down the street
Lost 3 big trees a few years ago to weather

Had one that the city planted at the old house.
Hated that thing.
Dropped leaves, seed balls, bark, branches, twigs all the time.
Last to drop leaves in the fall and they are huge and leathery.
Run them over with the lawnmower and I would go into coughing fits.
Glad I moved and got it out of my life.

I'd take a dozen Sycamores over one Bradford Pear; Invasive Chinese crap. Thanks, Ladybird Johnson!

I hate them. Not pretty in the Spring, Summer or Fall. Drop leaves seemingly forever. At my old house, my neighbor had the largest one I've ever seen. The portion of leaves I got from it amounted to more than all my trees together. Plus, my leaves would be down and gone before his Sycamore started dropping in earnest.

Had one in the front yard where I used to live. Hated that thing. Had to pick up its droppings every week to mow.

Luckily, even though my new subdivision has sycamore in its name, and sycamores were supposed to be planted in certain areas, nobody followed the original plan. I've planted 23 trees on my lot so far and not 1 of them is a sycamore.

From what I understand, they can be tapped for maple syrup, but their water content is high.

So they get to stay on our homestead with walnuts, oaks, pawpaws, etc.

I like them. The leaves chop up easily with the lawnmower. Way better than a damn magnolia tree.

Sycamores are gorgeous trees, but yes, messy.  Sycamore groves are great spots to look for morels in the Spring.  The wood grain is a twisty, interlocking mess, though.  It's the most miserable stuff in the world to split.  It's the only firewood I wouldn't take free, if I had to split it.

Same.  I love sycamore trees.

All those treehugging lefties never had to deal with tree consequences.  Trees are bad if they're within 100 yds of your house.

Cottonwood trees laugh in your general direction, pair that with a "pissing" elm tree and you can "tar and feather" your vehicle.

Not if you have enough sense to pick the right species and aren't too lazy/incompetent to maintain them.  In a hot climate, several good shade-providing trees near your house can be invaluable in reducing your power bill during the summer.  Plus, my hammock just wouldn't look and feel right if it was attached to anything other than the two stout trees between my back porch and the chicken coop.

I have three huge locust trees on my property and I hate them.  Tiny leaves that you can't do anything with.  One of them is coming down for sure and I'd love to be able to take the other two down but my other half says no.

Here is one that probably won't be making leaves next year.  Got struck with lightning a couple weeks ago, peeled the bark off parts of it.

It syckens me.

Sycamore are a beautiful tree, somewhere off in the woods. Just like river birch and sweet gum. If it's nowhere near the house it's great.

Yeah, like Willow Oaks - now there's a tree to complain about.  Even Carl Sagan can't count how many leaves those things drop.
