Guys seem to be running featureless rifles at competitions without too many issues.

Still better than a grand or mini-14

I would imagine the Ares SCR would work nicely. Most of the AR pros without all of the features that CA finds offensive.

If it is, the PMR30 is probably the baddest assed rifle they can buy.

Frankly, you could do worse.

Don't rule out the venerable lever action.

Not legal in factory form. Mag capacity is above 10, and telescoping stock goes shorter than 26”

CA law requires the OAL measurement in shortest adjustment point, while atf allows longest-config measurement.

Overall length with the stock collapsed is 22.7", which makes it a SBR under CA SBR laws.

Overall length with the stock collapsed needs to be 26" or greater, in order to be CA legal.
This can be done by either fixing the collapsible stock in the open/extended position or by attaching a 4" or greater length muzzle device.

Summary:
In order to be CA legal...
1. The overall length needs to be increased to 26" or greater.
2. Need 10 round magazines

My choice.  Not in CA but CT.

357 16in.  A bit larger and heavier than a 10/22.
I use inner tube bands to secure my light.  My front sling mount is a loop if paracord. The rear is a standard screw in. Utilizing the buttplate screw in the the top of the stock.

I do have ARs, but my situation is tricky. I step off my property with a "AW" and its a felony offense. I have neighbors I will die for.   Imo a "Non AW" is one less thing for me.

I could get a Mini or a SCR but I already had this rifle. So I made it work.

This. To me, it's the obvious choice. Takes any AR upper and most AR accessories. It is light years ahead of a Mini 14 or M1 Carbine. The rat tail recoil spring of the SCR is proven on the FAL rifles. Sure, I think the original AR configuration is still better, but for those that have no other choice, it's the best option out there.

Sure can.

Rimfire is exempt from all the features stuff and registration.

If you do a drop in conversion you are a BCG and mag change away from a full featured AR.

Last time I read up on the laws (about a decade ago) the AWB was written around "center-fire" cartridge weapons. Rimfires were exempt but standard (high) cap mag laws were still in play.

The best ones are self-loading centrefire rifles that are basically made in a configuration that lends itself well to being made featureless (such as those using traditional stocks) or those that have a pistol grip location that allows for adaptations giving a similar feel (such as AR-15s and grips like those made by Resurgent Arms and Sparrowhawk Dynamics), and which also use detachable mags and are basically military-pattern rifles.

Mini-14, Mini-30, SCR, SU-16CA, BM-59, M-14, M-1 Carbine, detachable-mag Garand, FN-49, MAS-49, and AR-15s with featureless grips or stocks (not grip fins, though; those suck), etc., just so long as care is taken to make sure they do not have things like flash suppressors, forward grips, grenade spigots, etc. and are not on any ban list.

Next-best are self-loading centrefire rifles that are fixed-mag by design, or are made as detachable-magazine rifles but have a secondary reloading system that make them usable even with a fixed mag.  Former include the Garand and SKS, for example.  Latter can include the FAL or Vz-58 converted properly to fixed-mag.  With the chargers that have come out for the AR-15, those are potentially viable for this as well.  These rifles can have all of the features one desires, although magazines must not exceed a ten-round capacity and they cannot be shorter than 30-inches OAL measured in the shortest fireable configuration (same with the top group).

I just bought one of those RDBs the other day, picking it up next week. Not sure what to expect, kinda bought it on a whim at my FFL. Heard the early versions were unreliable. This one just came from the factory. Keeping my fingers crossed its not a jam-o-matic.
