The thread about first movies seen got me thinking.  I saw Herbie the Love Bug there, but no Don Knotts.  His movies were a pretty regular occurrence for us.

Sure, everyone knows about Deputy Barney Fife, the model for modern LEOs everywhere.

But do you know this guy? (The Reluctant Astronaut)

or this one? (The Ghost and Mrs Chicken)

I met him at a bar at LAX airport once.  He was mortified that I requested a Martini garnished with a twist rather than an olive.

Meet him, Tim Conway and Barnard Fox at Biltmore House when they were filming Private Eyes. My grandmother slapped him on the back real hard and said " I really like you John don knots". He took it in stride and had a good chuckle about that. He was very pleasent talking to us. It has been a family joke since.

And don't forget Pleasantville.

Although ... I'm not sure if that's him doing his own lines in it.  I mean it's his face, but from what I've heard Craig Shoemaker got to do his Don Knotts impersonation for the movie.

extrapolation of that is the cops destroyed themselves when they decided to be am occupying fatigue wearing force instead of our neighbors.

He breathed new life into that show. Him and John had some really good funny scenes........that you couldn't do today. Imagine the butthurt over the "acting gay" and "homophobic response".

Funny, I just watched a Biography about him on Youtube. He was quite the ladies man in real life. His ex wives were quite stunning! He was also a major hypochondriac. Known as a tireless worker.

I was born in '84 but my grandparents and parents raised me off a healthy dose of Don Knotts, Richard Pryor, Gene Wilder, etc.  I had the best childhood growing up watching those on VHS.  Pretty sure we owned every Don Knotts movie.  The Reluctant Astronaut is still my favorite.

As I understand it, he frequently had LEOs give him a bullet as an homage to his "Barney Fife" character. During an interview(talk show?) he said "If you are a police officer, and you gave me a bullet, I still have it". I have to wonder how many there were and what happened to them after his death. That's my strange sense of curiosity I guess.

Don Knotts did an interview late in life and talked about the "nervous man" character that he created. He used this character in several movies and people just loved it. the hardest role in acting is being the doofus and he mastered the role.

Don't forget Shakiest Gun in the West.  The red head was pretty hot.

Ippity-doo, kanaba dip,  double dare, knock off the chip!

Now, what's this all about?

You wanna know what that's all about? I'll tell you what that's all about.
