We live in a nice, middle/upper class gated community. We really have no crime to speak of other than a few speeders. My driveway isn't big enough to keep the pop-up along with three cars so I pay the HOA $10 per month to store it on property that used to be a campground for the community. There are maybe a dozen or so campers or small enclosed trailers stored there. I parked it at end of last summer, chocked the wheels , covered with a new tarp, and padlocked the tongue. We haven't been able to use it lately and I don't usually go over there for any reason. I now have someone interested in buying it so I ran over to give it a quick check , make sure no mice have chewed on it or anything. Well, it's gone. No tarp, no wheel chocks even. Unless the HOA had some reason to move it, someone stole it. I will call them tomorrow and check and then file a police report. I hate how some people just can't keep their hands to themselves.

From what I can tell at night, yes. And that's what gets me, there are some nicer campers there, why fuck with my little pop- up ? I guess it was easy.

I told my wife they had to have had a pair of bolt cutters to cut the padlock off the tongue. Anyone who rides around with bolt cutters is usually up to no good to begin with.

My father in law cuts the tongues of his trailers then welds some strap to both pieces and bolts it back together when he needs to use his trailer.  It can not be stolen without the hitch.

Just remove the two bolts holding the hitch to the trailer tongue and replace with a new one you brought along.

Had a side drop utility trailer stolen a few years ago.  It was perfect for mine and the wife's 4 wheelers.  The lock had been cut that went through the  tongue.

They wouldn't need to cut the padlock there they may of just had a bolt sticking up where the ball would go on their hitch and just set the tongue down on it and drive away. I have the lock pictured above for all my trailers ever since I caught a dude trying to hook up to a buddies trailer loaded with all our snow machines. He was using the bolt trick like I was talking about... Dude got the living Shit scared out of him then we called the sherrifs and saw him pulled over on the way home from the mountains.

The Thursday night before Memorial day I told my wife we need to get a lock for our quad trailer. When I came home from work Friday afternoon it was gone. The thief had went along the side of my house and stole a campfire grill I made and a 20' extension ladder. The thief was in such a hurry that they didn't grab my ramps attached the back of the trailer and they bounced off in their haste to un ass my property.

I had that lost feeling on Sat and Sun I thought about a carwash down the road that might have a camera that faced the road and they did. I sat there for about six hr's watching the vid of the street to see my trailer go by but the quality wasn't good enough to get a good ID of the vehicle pulling it.

On Mon I went out to shoot my rifle and decided to go up a street by my house I happened to turn my head at the right time and through a small opening in some shrubs I saw the front of my trailer. Long story short the Sheriff couldn't find the serial number on my trailer and about that time this girl come driving in and the first words out of her mouth was I don't know who's trailer that is. The Sheriff asked how long it had been there and the girl said since Fri and didn't know who put it there. I asked the Sheriff if they couldn't find the serial number what happens and he said that will be a problem and I said how about we get my trailer back to my house and then if an argument starts it can happen over there and he said that was fine with him. and the girl repeated I don't know who's trailer that is and I said then you won't mind if I take my trailer back then and she said no go ahead. I looked around and found my Ladder also but not my grill.

Nobody got arrested which was a pissed but atleast  I got my trailer back.

In other words, your neighborhood is a perfect target for thieves - All the residents think they're perfectly safe, and are oblivious to what's happening.

This. If the lot is fenced and "secure" and they are charging you a rental fee, they have a certain degree of culpablity.
Worth a call to an attorney that deals with HOA issues.

The area has one road in / out. There is a gate that is not usually closed. There is no fence but all access to the main road is blocked by the woods, except through the gate.

Wouldn't surprise me if the HOA screwed up and had it impounded.

I used to pay a storage place to store my boat. Went to pick it up to start keeping it at my house and the storage place was trying to tell me I couldn't take it because they planned to auction it off because I didn't pay the storage bill for several months.

When I told them they were going to have a problem because I could show my bank statements indicating they deducted their charge every month, as recently as that same week, they quickly said they must have confused my parking space for another.

Yes, Lake M . The old campground isn't near any gates ( outside the gates ) so unless it was towed in through the gate.....

Also something I will look into today when I contact them. My wife paid 6 months storage at a time , it's paid through the end of the year. She said it took a while for the payment to clear her account but it did clear. Anything is possible at this point.

It might pop up on craigslist

In addition I don't see how the HOA has any responsibility either, should of bought theft insurance on it.  You don't hear of parking garages paying for cars stolen while parked there, or a city paying for a stolen car in front of a parking meter.

The fault is with the thief not the HOA.

good point. i was thinking of navy bases where the access is controlled, so thefts (like a car or home being broken into) on base are covered by the military.

One could take the roof air, furnace, water heater, cook top, propane tank/regulator, propane/electric mini fridge, microwave, fresh water tank/pump, black water holding tank/plumbing, sink/shower, bed frames/cushions, awning and battery/converter out of a pop up and build a basic toy hauler out of a simple covered cargo trailer.

The steel and aluminum scrap can be cut up and sold and the rest burned.

I always have a set of bolt cutters in my truck.  I guess I am up to no good.  For that matter, I always have a crowbar, a large screwdriver, and other assorted tools in my truck.  I should probably be put in jail just because.

I think the OP is correct that they took his camper because it was easy and probably they thought it was so low value that the police wouldn't seriously look into it.

I asked the same question. The police, although they are employed by the HOA , they don't control any of that stuff. I learned today from the police chief that the police wanted to put cameras at the gate but were turned down by the board. They would have cost less than $1000 . The chief wants the gate to be locked and keys handed out but also was turned down for some reason.
