SEOUL — Korea Aerospace Industries and the country’s Air Force on Tuesday confirmed the first successful test flight of Seoul’s indigenous 4.5th-generation fighter jet, the KF-21 “Boramae.”

The test puts South Korea on the map as the world’s eighth country to have developed supersonic fighter jets, 20 years after former president Daejung Kim ordered the development of a Korean fighter.

The Air Force and KAI previously conducted a successful ground-based engine thrust test late last month.

The KF-21, armed with 4 METEOR air-to-air missiles and piloted by Maj. Junhyeon Ahn of the Air Foce Test and Evaluation Unit, took off from an Air Force base near KAI’s headquarters in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, at 3:40 p.m. local time. The fighter jet flew at a speed of 400 km/h (200 knots) for 30 minutes to check basic functions of the jet’s body, landing safely at 4:13 p.m.

Yep, the place will have external weapons pile ons..on...

I'm not sure what they are expecting...

Probably would have been better off to go with the F-35, but I applaud their effort.

Which look to bear a resemblance to AIM-54 missiles.  I will have to look up those Meteor capabilities.

The South Koreans are definitely buying F-35s. They are even building carriers for them to fly off of.

It's a fighter aircraft in the current era. That goes without saying.

At least it's not some 6th generation monstrosity with the ability to fly at Mach 3 at over 87,000 feet and a price tag of $300,000,000 per copy.

The nose and intakes look almost exactly like a smaller F-22.  Maybe we can buy some of them since we can't build anymore F-22s and they are talking about retiring them all early.

Seemed low to me at first (I mean, it’s been like 60 years now).

Without looking, gonna guess:

USA
Russia
China
UK
France
Sweden
Brazil

… and now SK?

Still seems surprisingly low, but I guess the rest just buy everyone else’s jets.

It’s a 4.5 not a 5th gen fighter.

It will less than the F35 but more than a comparable fighter from another nation.

It incorporates 7-8 tech from the F35.  It was to have 12 but 4 were blocked by the us government.

Indonesia is a partner but has been deadbeats and have not paid their fair share.

The Koreans are building this even though they could buy F15EXs because they want the ability to build fighter jets.  It’s a learning process.

It still uses a ton of American electronics and GE engines.

You need to remove Brazil and add Japan.

It’s indigenously develop,  not just build.  Many countries can bill them.  Italy Ukraine Canada can all build fighter jets,  they just need the designs.

How will their next model, V2, if you will, look and perform?

I won't be sneering at this plane.  One thing you can be sure of, they won't need to buy engines from the russkies.

Form follows function.

Sharks and whales are different but have a similar profile due to both hunting swimming and living in water.

The 54 was bigger by almost 600lbs, but from what I have been reading, this Meteor has a lot of similar features. Beyond visual range, it's own active radar, speed of Mach 4+.
Even a throttling ramjet type motor

The AIM-54 is spec'd at 100nmi range and the Meteor is spec'd at greater than 54nmi, so the max range might not be published.   I had read another that purported a max range of over 100nmi, so....

While the rough size of an AIM-120c, it does look to have better range and targeting capabilities, and is about the same in ability as the 54, or maybe better, simply because it can be used on most modern aircraft.

Hedging bets, at a 75 nmi max range, a flight of four F18s decked out with 10 datalinked Meteors each would be a hell of a good fleet defence option.

Italian F-35s are being set up to be compatible with Meteor.

I think that they have to alter the fins so it can fit in the F-35s weapons bay.

Well, it should.   Lockheed Martin consulted on the design and helped in several other ways.

Kind of like how the KAI T-50 Golden Eagle looks F-16ish.  Lockmart helped with that, too.
