Well, you guys remember the Balikatan videos and pix I posted a page or so ago? Here's one more:
He is Lt. Roger Flores, one of the guys from Philippine Marine Force Recon. I am honored to have some friends there. The Outstanding Philippine Soldier (TOPS) 2014 Awardee
By: NAVAL PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE SERGEANT EUGENE J. PADILLA PN(M) Designation: Team Leader/Assistant Radio Man Unit of Assignment: 62nd Marine Company, Marine Special Operations Group, Headquarters Marine Special Operations Group, Marine Base Gregorio Lim, Ternate, Cavite Years in Service: 10 years Sergeant Eugene J. Padilla belongs to an elite unit of the Philippine Marine Corps. He says that being part of this group entails a lot of expectations from peers and subordinates to act beyond what is expected. He has his share of life threatening stories that required him to dodge bullets and come face to face with death during encounters. As a radio operator, his task is to ensure the uninterrupted communication lines between units at all times. Among his accomplishments, he is proudest of his invention of a Jungle Antenna. During combat operations, intermittent signal and unclear messages could spell the difference between life and death. His innovation which is still being used in the AFP to this day enabled the troops to establish clearer lines of communication between the headquarters and the troops. Sgt. Padilla’s invention not only helped improve the operations of the AFP but also saved them money because it may be built with low cost materials. The feat earned him the Gold Cross Medal for his service. Also, one of his most memorable experiences as a soldier was being part of the search and rescue operations to the passengers of the Super Ferry 14 that caught fire in 2004. Despite the raging current of the water, the team was able to save 420 people from drowning. As part of the Marine Corps, he also led the mediation between disputing families in Sulu and saved lives from an impending crossfire. Sgt. Padilla’s various accomplishments as a soldier truly goes beyond combat duty. He believes that he is one of the countless members of the AFP who want to achieve peace above all else. -end- Posted: Jun-15-2014 Yes, they called him a soldier, not a Marine. Branch is Navy. They're funny about that, there. It just strikes me that I have met both these men, peripherally from friends of mine, both of them are among the best that the Philippine Marine Corps puts out, and one's here, and the other's not. Just that quick. 48 hours between the two making the papers for quite different reasons. It's truly humbling.

A small team of French and Norwegian special operations forces participated in Exercise Flintlock 2014 by teaching small unit tactics and fostering cooperation with soldiers from Niger from Feb. 19 to March 9, 2014. The French team brought years of experience in training African military troops and said they enjoyed working in the multinational environment in Diffa, Niger. Flintlock exercises began in 2005 and have grown to become a global endeavor spanning multiple countries, languages and cultures. The picture was provided by one of Michael Murphy's teammates during the recovery operation taken from the adjoining ridge line showing the area where the battle took place, Danny, Michael and Axe were found and Marcus's escape route. However, the publisher of SEAL of Honor" where the photo is reproduced, misspelt Marcus' name and in the original photo provided, it actually said "LT & Danny" not Murphy & Dietz and Axe not Axelson. - Daniel Murphy, Michael Murphy's father
