You have no clue.

It's coming from Lake O and the water that is released.

Big sugar doesn't want it near their  farmlands so it goes east, instead of south to the Everglades.

The problem is they're dumping millions of nasty ass freshwater where it doesn't belong.

People have been fertilizing their lawns since forever.

The alge only shows up when the Army Corpse overreacts and drains the lake all at once.

The lake naturally drained out through the Everglades in to the bay for gazillions of years.

That is until Big Sugar realized there was gold in that there muck.

Write a few checks, s me over a few hookers, say the right things and voila the water drains east and west.

That would make it much worse.
Copious amounts of rain = Lake Okeechobee runoff

Is this happening on the west side  at Ft Myers/ Cape Coral as well?

They drained Lake Okeechobee through the Caloosahatchee last winter and  the "fresh water" (not saline but really nasty ) was killing the fishing then.

Yes.

I think they're dumping more through the St. Lucie side though.

They should pump it up to North Dakota.  Apparently the farm boys up there know how to handle it.

what they really need to do is dredge that fucker out and make it 100 feet deep unlike the childlike depth of 15 feet that it is now.  Leave all the fucking water in the lake.

http://water.unl.edu/lakes/toxicalgae-faqs

Pets and livestock have died from drinking water containing toxic blue-green algae. The risks to humans comes from external exposure (prolonged contact with skin) and from swallowing the water. Symptoms from external exposure are skin rashes, lesions and blisters. More severe cases can include mouth ulcers, ulcers inside the nose, eye and/or ear irritation and blistering of the lips. Symptoms from ingestion can include headaches, nausea, muscular pains, central abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. Severe cases could include seizures, liver failure, respiratory arrest-even death, although this is rare. The severity of the illness is related to the amount of water ingested, and the concentrations of the toxins.

It is very serious shit.  My dad started reading a book a few years ago and freaked out, he gave it to me to read.  The book documents the algae blooms that occurred in North Carolina in the early 90's.  What scared the hell out of me was when I compared the dates of the blooms with my dive log.  We were diving in the Neuse River at Atlantic Beach/Moorehead City where this was all happening.  I remember seeing the fish swimming by with giant holes in their sides being eaten alive.  Dad developed memory problems and some other issues around that time and I wonder if they may be related.
