Ridiculous. I feel like this guy is just seeking attention now with these prophetic predictions. The key to the continuation of humanity doesn't lie in some pipe dream about colonizing space. It lies in learning to live SUSTAINABLY on our own world. The key to such a thing is a gradual reduction in the human population to below 1 billion individuals. Free contraception for all, and payments for those who abstain from having children would be critical to such a goal.
http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/stephen-hawking-humans-have-100-years-to-find-a-new-planet/ar-BBAJkNC?li=BBnb7Kz&ocid=mailsignout It’s no secret that physicist Stephen Hawking thinks humans are running out of time on planet Earth. In a new BBC documentary, Hawking will test his theory that humankind must colonize another planet or perish in the next 100 years. The documentary Stephen Hawking: Expedition New Earth, will air this summer as part of BBC’s Tomorrow’s World season and will showcase that Hawking's aspiration "isn’t as fantastical as it sounds," according to BBC. For years, Hawking has warned that humankind faces a slew of threats ranging from climate change to destruction from nuclear war and genetically engineered viruses. While things look bleak, there is some hope, according to Hawking. Humans must set their sights on another planet or perish on Earth. “We must also continue to go into space for the future of humanity,” Hawking said during a 2016 speech at Britain’s Oxford University Union. In the past, Hawking has suggested that humankind might not survive "another 1000 years without escaping beyond our fragile planet.” The BBC documentary hints at an adjusted timeframe for colonization, which many may see in their lifetime. |

I wish he and all who think like him would find a new planet to live on
|

Mankind is far to fragile to keep all of its eggs in one basket.
Can't remember who said but it has stuck with me for many, many years. |
|
Let's find TWO new planets to live on.
One we can name Galt's Planet The other we can name Planet Marx We will choose and send colonists accordingly |
|
In a sense, I think he is right. But I don't necessarily agree on the cause or time table.
|
|
we should find a new planet, then a new solar system, then another then another
humanity is doomed if we stay here but I doubt its going to happen in the next 100 years, but hell it might. We could have a nice sized rock slam into us any time. |
|
I agree we should renew focus on space exploration, but not because we have 100 years to move.

If this guy is the smartest guy on the planet (the planet he wants to leave) whey the heck is he sitting in a wheelchair talking through a computer. Physician, heal thyself.

While I don't necessarily believe his time scale or ecological blather is correct, he's not wrong.
The next Dinosaur Killer Rock From Space is on the way, we don't know when, but it IS coming. Be a good idea to have a sustainable population other than on Earth, don't you think? |
|
I guess we really don't need to tell him to shut up, all we have to do is turn off his computer.
|

A hundred years before landing on the moon, cars and airplanes didn't exist.
I see no reason why we couldn't reach for the goal of populating other planets. It would suck to burry our heads in the sand and have Earth get another mass extinction and kill off mankind. |
|
Dinosaurs went extinct because they didn't have a space program
|
|
|
well we've fucked then because half of our society is more interested in funding and pushing for more SJW crap than they are getting off this rock
progressive to me is having the USS Enterprise in near Earth orbit and for them it's the gender pay gap and non-binary bathrooms |

100 years? Are the Reapers coming so soon?

|
It's hard to gauge the probabilities on such a thing.
Global warming, climate change? Unlikely. If those on "that side" of the argument really believed it, instead of just using it as a way to soft-peddle international Marxism and as a political weapon, we'd see a desperate wholesale push for nuclear fission power. They'd be divesting themselves of seafront real estate. They'd be investing in a pattern consistent with believing this was all true. And they are not. However, we are going to be entering into a rather scary time when hell... not even ISIS or North Korea, but just a pissed off teenager could design a doomsday plague using CRISPR right on his desktop in the coming decades. That's going to be rather froggy. Space makes for one hell of a quarantine. But mostly, getting back to the OP's post and back on topic, it's really just that nobody wants to be mean to the Gimp in the wheelchair and say: "SHUT UP STEVEN! BLACK HOLE MATH DOESN'T MEAN YOU KNOW SHIT ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE." |

You ignore a LOT of technological advancements that are just around the corner.

The earth is dying. We need to put all our politicians, pundits, celebrities, and billionaires on a rocket to save our best and brightest.
The rest of us will follow along... Soon. |

I'd guess 2-300 more, but he might be about right. Ecosystem services in the future aren't going to be what they are today and eventually will come apart at the seams.
Flame away... |

He is not wrong. All it's going to take another large impact event to set us back thousands of years.
That first paragraph is some silly ignorant shit OP. |

The joke is he will be dead by then. Easy to say XYZ will happen in 100 years when you won't be around to answer for it, or the trouble you put everyone through that believes in you.

HAHHAHAHAHAHA
Yeah fucking right. As soon as we find a new hospitable planet the liberals of this world will demand we do environmental impact studies and spend 1500 years studying the climate so we don't ruin it with our trucks and SUVs. They'll show the |

You know, the way thinks seems to be these days it might be better if we did stay confined to Earth. We seem to be a rather screwed up lot recently and it would be a shame to infect the rest of the Cosmos with us.
We are the gift that keeps on giving. |
|
Well if we can't keep our growth rates under control, this planet may not be desirable to live on anyway. Don't worry, if we find another planet, we'll encompass it too.

Would people pay as much attention to him if he wasn't confined to that amped-up mobility scooter?

No, what we need is an energy source that's better than setting a bunch of rotten dinosaurs on fire. And better battery technology.
