So far GD has guided me in the right direction with my new lawn mower (Toro 22in self propelled, with smart stow and vortex). Now I need a string trimmer for my yard. So GD Echo or STHL? Budget is 250 bucks.
This is for a residential property about a 1/4 acre. |

Stihl gets my money. And get a straight shaft. (Insert penis joke here)
|

Straight shaft, and the biggest CC engine in your price range.
I think I've got the Ryobi 30cc for attachments and its 3 years old and does ok. |

For that size yard forget about gas. Pay a little more now for battery power and save your gas money and time. I have almost a 1/2 acre and this works just fine, I can do the yard 3 times before I have to charge it. The price has gone up since I bought mine but you may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.

DeWalt, I like gas because of the long term, will the battery powered string trimmers work 10 years from now? I have a drill and impact set I purchased in 2007 that still work great and have been beat on much more than a city lot will beat on a string trimmer. If you go gas there's no reason to buy a big heavy straight shaft trimmer. I have 3 stihl trimmers, one is a large brush cutter version, one medium straight, one small curved. I use the small curved shaft around the house and yard. |

I have a red max that is 13 years old and still kicking. As mentioned to with one that has a good dealer in the area and use the engineered fuel like TruFuel. It made a big difference in the reliability of my gas mixed tools.

My old Echo is still going strong with an occasional carb rebuild.

Mine is a two-stroke ECHO model. It has survived over 20 years of residential use and is still going strong.

I have a Stihl Combi system. The string trimmer that is part of that works excellent. Despite that, I pick up my Dewalt battery string trimmer every time (since the day I bought it.) Much lighter & quieter.
While currently around $120 (bare tool) they occasionally sell for around $80. I replaced the head with a Husqvarna 966674401 T25 Tap Trimmer Advance Head for less than $20 and it is GTG for your sized lawn. |

My old Snapper trimmer and hand held blower lasted just over 15 years. My Stihl trimmer and hand held blower are now 16 and still rolling. I just ordered a new trimmer head last night, it'll be the 5th I've put on it. It is used and used hard.
That said, now that we're at the farm full time my nearest dealer sells Echo and if I buy a new one that's what it'll be. |

I have a Stihl straight shaft trimmer.
I mostly use it for land clearing. I run an 8" carbide tooth blade on it. It will cut a 2" tree without slowing down. I have taken out 6-8" trees by cutting around them. Thing is a beast. |
|
Get an Echo, preferable the power head models so you can attach other tools if needed. I've been happy with mine. Use ethanol free gas.
If you have a smaller yard, it seems the cordless battery options have developed a strong following the last few years. |
|
I'm still using a Stihl FS 56 that I bought five years ago, it's still going strong.

Echo SRM225 has been great for nearly 10 years of 2 acres of landscape and brush clearing. No repairs, 1 new bump head. I use the premixed fuel last 3-4 years.

I’ve been running a Stihl FS70R for about two years now and it’s been great. It was about $250-300 IIRC. Money well spent.
It’s the smallest, least expensive “professional grade” string trimmer they offer and it’s leagues better than their most expensive “residential grade” trimmer. The engine is built to last longer, it’s more powerful and it has a longer straight shaft which makes it a lot easier to use than a curved one. |

Quoted: For that small amount of land I'd go cordless. View Quote I used a battery-powered EGO on five acres. No problem. I have other EGO tools, so I had multiple batteries. Charge two while using one, and you could go all day. By the time one died, I needed a break anyway. I would never want a gas string trimmer again. I do have a gas brush cutter that has a string trimmer head, but I always have the saw blade on it. I use it to cut brush and saplings. |

Cordless is awesome, I've not used EGO tools before. I have m18 goodies at work and I love not effing around with 2T mix, noise, plugged up carbs, plugged up mufflers , etc. They aren't perfect for every application but they really shine where they are. |

EGO.
I have their whole system with the powerhead and all the attachments. Takes care of my 1/2 acre with tons of trees/bushes/etc. Very convenient and powerful. |
|
i bought a Stihl fs70r when i bought my home in september. i really wanted a 94r but that was like $150 more. i know the one i bought will last a lifetime. Stihl all the way

I like my 20v dewalt trimmer. It is just fine for small lots.
|
|
Get a Husky trimmer. I’ve been using a 224L for a while and it just keeps taking a beating.
|

|
Been using an Echo PAS-225 for a few years now with trimmer and edger attachments and it works great (4700sqft of yard). If I had to do it again I might go with an EGO electric multi-head as my EGO electric leaf blower is awesome.

|
I would have recommended the FS70, it's served me well over like 6 years or so and has put up with abuse. But the battery trimmers will do for a 1/4 acre yard.
Quoted: Skip a couple of range trips and fast food for an FS131 View Quote Can attest, thing is a beast on thick tall grass with a tri blade. I can only imagine the bigger units. |

Quoted: Shindaiwa t235 is what you seek. View Quote This or the Echo 225. The Echo is about $230 at Home Depot and comes with a speed feed head. If you don’t know what that is, watch some videos on YouTube, it’s awesome. Most importantly, don’t use ethanol gas. Buy the premix in cans or find a station near you that sells good ol regular ethanol free gas. It is about $5 a gallon currently but you won’t be replacing your carburetor every year. |

I bought a $100 rechargable Worx last year, 1/3 acre, lots of fence to trim around. Works great, lightweight, no regrets.

After you get your new string trimmer, don't use it around an underground Yellowjacket nest with it. The Yellowjackets will come out in a freaking cloud to let you and your gas powered string trimmer know you are not welcome around the entrance to their nest.
Ask me how I know... But I imagine it would have been funny as hell to see a video of me hollering like a 10 year old girl as I immediately exited the area, complete with numerous Yellowjackets doing their level best to sting the living' shit out of me. |
