I dont know if there's a thread on this already but I've been hearing alot of funny stories recently from people that were a part of, or overheard discussions or comments while working in or visiting a gun shop.

There are alot of new, uneducated and/or mislead potential gun buyers out there right now whether it comes to someone thinking they can just walk in and out with a new Glock in 10 minutes with no permit or someone just spewing incorrect information. my personal experience has been there have been more bonehead gun shop employees than customers. I'm talking places like Gander, Cabelas ect.

Anyway, I was curious if anyone has heard some funny crap while shopping at their local shop. Feel free to share, please!

Also, MN’s handgun permit requirement isn’t the norm OP; although that doesn’t really change the substance of what you’re saying.

My father was a gunsmith for 40 years, he had a customer call him because he had just purchased a rem 1100 gas operated shotgun and wanted to know where to put the gas in. Dad told him to bring it on down and he would fill it up, and we would never have to fill it up again.

I worked the gun bar at Academy for a while. I've probably forgotten more stupid shit than you ever heard.
.22 for hit men/bounce around in the head
  Rack a shotgun for burglars
One guy was looking to get into reloading and wanted to know if it was ok to just fill the case up with powder.
.223 was no good for deer because it was so fast it would be gone before it could expand.
Its illegal to use HP in SD unless you're a cop.

Cabela's counter guy that owned a "S&W Sigma in 40mm cause that's what cops carry". I might have chalked up the 40mm thing to a slip of the tongue if he hadn't said it 3 times.

LGS guy telling a customer that he should choose an Eotech over a Trijicon because the military was dropping Trijicon over QA concerns.

Wat?  Once I bought a Glock just because a guy from Connecticut was in my LGS asking about gun laws here, I think he said something like, “so someone from Pa can just buy that?”  I said can I get that one please.

What’s funny, is that years ago I would go visit gun shops in CT (lived in MA) and drooled over all the things we couldn’t buy in MA.

That was just after the 1998 fiasco, and before the influx of 2nd hand items that people “moved into the state with”.

He was statistically correct. Most engagements are less than a mag and less than 10 seconds.

However, it's not the odds that make me carry.  It's the stakes.

There's a lot of unknown variables here. Unless the shotgun was going to sell for more than $10k, I doubt they were making $2700, sale price does not equal profit. Without more details, the counter monkey was likely less in the wrong than you were.

After the Texas Church shooting where that guy Jack dusted the perp with the .357 P229 SIG......I was at a shop in Jacksonville and this old dude comes in, probably pushing 75+, New York accent, goes up to the counter and says "I want a gun to shoot someone, like in a church"......they almost threw him out but then just realized he was on old lonely guy just wanting to BS

I was at the LGS store a year or two ago.  I have purchased used guns from them before and know the price tag is a starting point for the used gun.   Thye had a sweat little .410 SXS for $500.   It was a little short for me but would fit my Granddaughter perfectly.   The shotgun was not a name brand.   I carry it up to the counter and ask the countere guy what he really needs for the gun.  He said the price is on the tag.   That's the price take it or leave it.  I looked at him and said leave it.  While I was walking out one of the counter guys I have bought from looked at me with a WTF look on his face.  I pointed at the yahoo behind the counter and left.  I saw him go up and talk to the yahoo i had talked to.

I actually don't hear a lot of nonsense at gun stores. You run into the "I don't like _______ brand" quite a bit. But to each their own.

The biggest misconception I hear about is gun registration. Every non-gun-owner thinks there is nationwide gun registration.

I haven't spent much time in gun shops apart from ones I've worked in, and I've tried to not be the stereotypical counter monkey, to the extent I can. I have heard some weird shit from the other side of the counter.

"I'd like to buy a 12 gauge shell". Okay, our shotgun ammo is over here. "No, I just need one". Uh...I think you need to leave, ma'am.

"Yo, man. I need some choppa bullets". Excuse me? "I need some choppa bullets, yo!" I'm not sure what that is, do you know what caliber you're looking for? "How the hell you work at a gun store you don know what choppa bullets is?" Uh...I think you need to leave, sir. (turns out, he was talking about 7.62x39, who knew?)

A small .380 is the perfect gun for [all] women.

We can’t do anything on the price. The prices are set by the ATF.

Federal HST is restricted to Law Enforcement Officers only. We need to see a badge to sell that.

(after asking to see an SBR on the rack) You need a class 3 license to buy that. You will need to make an appointment with the owner and bring in your paperwork before we can allow you to even hold it.

(after asking to look at a Group/Vector full-auto UZI) “First let me ask you, do you know how much a gun like that costs?” I told him not to bother and ended up buying the same model from his competition who was eager to show me their gun, took it apart and fully explained the Group/Vector pros & cons. This was back when they were $3,500.

A guy came in one day ask my coworker if we have any 40mm ammo. My buddy sez "you mean forty call s&w?. The guy sez "NO I mean 40 millimeter!" So my buddy tells him to go to military gun supply on the loop. They might be able to put him in touch with a collector or something. The guy looks puzzled and sez y'all don't carry it? My buddy sez nope, we don't get much call for anti aircraft ordinance.

One of my conversations the other day:

Which would you pick a 10-22 or a 40-06. Before you answer man just let me tell you I'm all about the power man. I mean is that 10-22 a piece of shit or what?

You can hunt with a .22 right?.....I want to be able to take down some big shit! I'm new to the gun game but I'm all about power man
