I picked up this PTR about 6 months ago because I was missing a 7.62 battle rifle & the price was right, but I still haven’t fired it yet. An Aimpoint Pro without the riser seems to be a good fit. I’m aware of the platform’s limitations & won’t be dumping a ton of money into it, just curious about any upgrades/accessories that might make the rifle more capable but also aren’t crazy expensive?

If you are going to shoot it rapidly, the wide handguards are better than the thin.  It heats up pretty quick

Have a huge pile of $4 mags?

I bought an extra slim forend from RTG, put a rail on it, and a german VFG.  That handguard gets hot after a couple of magazines. Add a german army sling, aluminum mags and you're done.

Look for a factory bipod as well. It is designed for the wide hand guard.

Get a factory rubber mg buttpad for longer length of pull and a less sore shoulder if you shoot all day long.

A heavy buffer is nice too.

Wood furniture. There's something incredibly pretty about an HK with nice wood furniture.

One or two South Arfican 30rd mags....there out there. Heavy to patrol with, ok for a fire in place situation.

The Spuhr collapsing stocks are a nice ergonomics upgrade, especially if you have an optic mounted. They are kind of ugly though.

Hk heavy buffer.  PCS makes one.

My 2 eat steel cased ammo like it was made for it which it kinda was.

What's your budget for upgrades?

A factory wide forearm and bipod is a good start.

Trick it out with a MSG90 trigger group and adjustable MSG90 stock if finances permit.

Fire it before spending money on it.  I had a G3 that had battle rifle accuracy, which means better than a Mini 14, but not by much.  Combined with a horrible trigger, it was not fun.  A good scope points it out quickly.

Timney is coming out with a new trigger for them, but it may not be worth it if your barrel doesn't group.

I had a collapsible stock that I sold to finance the wider handguard and fixed butt stock, so I didn't get hurt on the deal.
I did take some beating on the claw scope mount.

Had a PTR91 for a few years, never really grew on me.
A wide handguard did did make it nicer, just not nice enough.

If you can find an A3 retractable stock for $200-250 give or take, I'd get one.

Might not be able to find one now, as prices are stupid for some reason on all things. Don't get suckered into paying $300-400+.

A3 stock certainly adds "the cool factor". Personally, I did not find the A3 comfortable to utilize for more than a limited round count of firing.

I did a factory collapsible stock and bill Springfield did the trigger.  It’s ok.  Not really impressed. I would like a wide handgaurd.

You should get a trigger job at http://www.williamstriggers.com/, he also do set triggers. Years ago, prior to the CAlif AWB, I was at Fish Canyon, Monrovia CA, I met a guy there who had a HK91-type gun, he told it was not true HK91, but a clone.

Anyways his gun had like a 6-7lb trigger pull, very similar to the trigger pull  of a S&W DA revolver. I only shot a 3 rounds but it was really fun, really easily to the bulleye 50yds down range.

Williams can also reshape the contour of the trigger so that it is easier for you got your finger on the trigger, and they also do set triggers without significantly  altering the visible external appearance of the trigger pack. I got this info from his website.

I was in the same boat and ended up spraying a black handguard with a few coats of camouflage green rustoleum and then coating it with some polyacrylic. It has held up great for the past few years and matches pretty darn close. The trick is you have to let the poly cure for as long as possible or it will look like crap. I gave it a week. And don’t use polyurethane as it can cause the paint to smear with the solvents.

The Lynx-12 below has a similar process done to create a “fakelite” finish.

In 2003 I picked up a pre 1989 HK91, factory wide forearm with bipod, A2, A3, MSG90 stocks, MSG90 trigger group, HK claw mount and Hendsoldt optic. Turned out to be very accurate out to 350y.

It's a Swedish AK4 copy. Correct stock, rail, and aimpoint. Rear sight removed since its unusable with a spuhr stock.

Spuhr all the things. Handguards, stock, optics mount.

One day I’ll have a PTR to replace my old HK91 and that’s exactly what I’ll do to it.

The only things I would do is change the handguard. For either a wide handguard or something that allows mounting of flashlight or whatever. And an optic.

My mods were heavy buffer , wide handguards with bipod, carry handle and Vortex glass in a claw mount.
I also re-worked the trigger to a clean 5 lb break.

I'd suggest a cheek riser for that red dot. Looks like way high over the comb.

I owned a PTR-91 back when I bought (I think) 50 mags for $1.50 each. Traded it for a Polytech M-14S, which I was an absolute fool to trade off. I miss that Poly
