Mouth Taping

We had dinner with our friends last weekend and they mentioned that they have started to tape their mouths at night, to force breathing through their nose.  After some searching, there has been an uptick in doing this through TikTok (1st flag).  Apparently, it's supposed to improve snoring, sleep apnea, and oral issues.  Personally, it freaks me out to tape my mouth shut at night. I mean, death is a thing.

On the cheap, it's recommended to use Micropore Standard Hypoallergenic Surgical Tape.  Our friends say they use Hostage tape.  Yes, HOSTAGE tape.

Hostage Tape

Does anyone here actually do this?  I'm not interested in doing this myself, just wondering if the benefits are true or not.

My dentist actually told me to start doing this.   I said sure I'll try that.  Then ignored him.

Do they also add a layer of nose hair to aid in filtration?

I'll stick with the CPAP.  Sleeping involuntary me needs all the help i can get breathing.

I have a nasal pillow CPAP. When I first got it, they gave me a chin strap to keep my mouth shut in case I had issues keeping my mouth shut. I never used it. I'd think something like that would be easier and cheaper in the long run.

But if you've got apnea, taping your mouth shut is a fucking stupid idea.

yeah... I had a nose only for my CPAP. I had to go to a full face. Especially with allergies coming on. I was waking up almost choking because I could only breath through my nose, and my nose would get stuffy.

No.  Hell no.  Fuck no.  Fuck all that noise.  I have enough issues sleeping without adding the fear of choking to death.

Don't show this to my wife, she'll expect me to tape my mouth shut during the evening as well

Great idea, until you have difficulty breathing through your nose, for whatever reason, and your blood pressure shoots through the roof as your sleeping body is trying to get oxygen in, and you have a stroke.

I know that seems crazy, but my younger brother, who is a skinny guy, had a stroke at age 27 (he has recovered).  The cause was determined to be that he had apnea and was having trouble sleeping.  He took sleep meds and his body had trouble waking itself.

It's not completely crazy.

From Huberman's Podcast

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4m_PdFbu-s&t=2836s

-----------------------------------
Mouth breathing during sleep is not just undesirable; it is actually dangerous—as it is associated with sleep apnea (which puts people at risk for numerous cardiovascular issues, impaired craniofacial development in kids, and aesthetics and tooth and gut health in adults, and more.

The solution is to become a nasal breather as much of the time as possible and especially during sleep. Some people opt to tape their mouth shut before sleep, but another solution that is additionally beneficial is to restrict yourself to nasal breathing during low to moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise (which we should all be doing at least 180 to 200 minutes per week for health). I discuss all this and additional tools for sleep in the newest episode of the Huberman Lab Podcast out now.

And if you’re interested in the data on nasal breathing, its benefits and the negative effects of mouth breathing excessively, check out the book Jaws by my colleagues Dr. Paul Erhlich and Dr. Sandra Kahn, from Stanford University School of Medicine.

Just a variation on anti-snoring stuff that's been on the market for decades.

My grandma back in the 70s had this weird face brace thing that held her jaw shut that she wore to prevent snoring. Apparently she had it since the 60's.

I just ordered one of those off Amazon.  Haven't even tried it yet.

I have some trouble breathing though my nose and default to my mouth.
My only thought is, maybe its because it was broken a few times in H.S. when I got jumped by Choir Boys in Gym and Shop class.

A) Doesn't seem compatible with my facial hair
B) I grind my teeth like they're a grist mill and I'm solely responsible for supplying the entire world with flour so I wear a fitted mouth guard, I doubt my mouth opens much anyway
C) No

Yep,

doing it and it works.

Best sleep in years and I stopped snoring and the wife unit loved it.

But do go make fun of it, do scream HUURR der in your fatty life and do the CPAP and on and on and on and on.

Another example in the everyday life of what they never taught you in school.

On how to BREATH properly.

Lol. This isn’t a TikTok fad.

Lots of health conscience people tout this.

Check out Tom Bilyeu his podcast and other mediums is called Impact Theory

There’s even an entire book written on the subject that I believe is called Breathe.

No pictures though. So I suspect no one in GD will be interested.

Why stop at night? There is another 12 hours people could be taping their mouths shut.

I do this and it works. My wife appreciates it and I seem to sleep better. The tape is light enough that you can easily get it off if needed. I took it off the first few weeks some nights but now I sleep through and it's still there in the morning.

The only time I don't use it is when my nose is completely congested.

I will add that is only works well when I shave every day.

They'll find their way inside.  Except the b-hole taper above - he's outsmarted his way into spider deficiency.

Wife started doing it a couple of most months ago. She has slept better than
she has in years.

I use nose pillows on the CPAP, and after going awhile without using it, the wife said I was opening my mouth, and all the CPAP air was rushing out of my mouth, but I wasn't waking up.

So I started using tape over my mouth at night.  Slept fine, wasn't too worried about not being able to breathe since I had CPAP pillows on my nose.

Now I've done it long enough that I've trained myself to not open my mouth at night, so no more taping.

I'm constantly clogged up in my sinuses.

If I did this, my brain wouldn't get enough oxygen, and I'd wake up more retardeder than usual.

Cool if it works for people though.

No, it takes time to do it. I was the exact same way. Your brain is a pretty amazing thing and it will adopt.

I had issues the 1st night but by the 2nd night, my brain figured it out on what I was doing and I slept for a good 8 hours with no disturbance.
