Just finished the first test in the basement and it was 15. Started second test and if it confirms high levels, what am I facing to get this problem permanently fixed?

Usually, $2k-$4k will get you a remediation system that will get you close to zero.

My basement tested at a 4 or maybe 5.  I just open the windows when there's a breeze outside and let it air out now and then.

Jesus. You would think people that dumb would eventually just forget how to breathe and solve the problem...

To expand on my quote - "new age bullshit" is stuff that isn't real and measurable. Aromatherapy, chakras, healing energies, etc.

Radon is real. It is potentially dangerous. Yes, yes, I am aware with radiation exposure there are varying degrees of what is "safe" or not. The problem is often times it just increases  your likelihood of cancer slightly.  But those risks add up.

But $1000 for an easy fix that vents it out of the house and that is one less danger to be exposed to? Count me in.

Read about the guy in Pennsylvania that started all of the Radon stuff.

My hometown.

I worked for Stan after college doing radon mitigation.

PooPoo all you want, but his kids were exposed to enormous amounts of radon and it was like smoking a couple of hundred cigarettes per day.

When we bought our house, the radon test came back high. The wife freaked because we have a little one who will be playing on the basement. So, a company was hired to install a 3" pvc pipe thats ties into our sump. It has a constant running fan that must pull air out. Looks like a pretty easy install job but the cost was covered by the sellers during the home purchase.

If you ask me, I think radon is a bunch of new age bullshit.

Here's a thought.  Maybe since the levels are extremely high in those areas, the residents/zoning/permitting/housing inspector folks are pretty keen on mitigating radon, and so the exposures are minimized?

Radon fears are mostly alarmist bullshit.

The science behind the danger levels is laughably bad, and the howls of "tens of thousands die every year" is absurd. Does anyone know anyone who has died of Radon exposure? Except a coal miner?

If you overlay maps that show the radon belt, and a map with incidents of lung cancer, they do not correlate at all...in fact in some areas with extremely high levels incidence of cancer is extremely low. What's that say?

There's even some studies that suggest low level (in the ranges the EPA says are dangerous) might be beneficial.

They kept track of cancer rates going back decades...long before people were even aware of Radon as a risk. The geographic markers for high cancer incidents haven't moved much.

Nice try, but no.

Here's my take, if you believe it's BS or not.  If you test, and it comes back over 4 pCi/l, you are at the "action level" and remediation is recommended.

Why did they choose 4 as the action level? And, is there any valid science behind that decision?

Start there, and go down that rabbit hole (read the interesting links I posted last page).

Nothing wrong with being safe, and if you wanna remediate your house knock yourself out - but if it was even anywhere near the danger the EPA and home inspectors howl about, we'd see lung cancer through the radon belt in shocking numbers.

How hard is this to grasp?

Radon is that huge Japanese bird monster.  Godzilla has a "thing" for him.  Use T shot in steel, or BB in lead.

I hope you don't fly frequently, eat bananas, or live in an area with naturally high radiation. All of those things will get you before the radon will.

IIRC correctly, the study that made Radon a cancer hazard was done among Uranium miners, since they were exposed to very high levels of it.

They were also very heavy smokers...

I believe that's correct. If my memory serves me correctly the non smoking miners did not show a statistically significant increase in cancer risk.

Someone tell these guys that they should all have some serious cancer by now.

Depends on how much Radon you're exposed to and how long. Brief exposure from a plane ride is different than constantly breathing it in. Radon is everywhere. There is "acceptable" levels of it, but if your house has too much and falls out of the "safe" levels, better safe than sorry.

The data has been linked but overwhelmingly shows that people with exposure to low to mid levels of radiation live longer and better lives

How about the pilots? What about the areas where people are exposed to insane amounts of background radiation every day of their lives? The more we research the effects of radiation on the human body the more it is becoming clear that it's not linear and that there is a time factor involved. So long as government regulation flies in the face of science and reason I'll resist the better safe than sorry attitude.
