Non venomous.  Let him pass

Nowhere near a copperhead.   He's fine.  No poison.

Harmless.  A small rate snake or something.

Harmless, unless your tenant is a cricket.

Google juvenile black rat snake and forward picture.  Too many people growing up indoors these days.  Being able to ID any venomous snake in your AO is "basic dude stuff".

What are you really asking, how he actually came to know what a copperhead looks like? That's obviously not a copperhead, they are pretty easy to identify but they are the most misidentified snake out there.

The head is not triangular.

In America all the venomous snakes we know of have triangular head, elliptical eyes, and pits.

EXCEPT coral snek and its definitely not one of those.

Unless it's an escaped pet...I doubt OP's tenant found an anerythristic corn snake in the wild. Those are selectively bred for coloration.

Either way it's a Pantherophis of some sort (cornsnakes and ratsnakes). 100% harmless, even make decent pets.

the black circular eyes.  all venomous snakes native to NA *except* the coral snake (and we know it ain't red-n-yellow) have cat's eye style pupils.  That pic is good enough to zoom in a little and see that there are no slits there, just round eyes.

Note copperhead here and the eyes -

Don't ask me the exact variety of corn snake is in OP's photo - I was just looking for one with similar coloration.
