Quoted: Haven't they been issuing P320s since 2015? Are they just switching to M17s because they want the manual safety? ![]() The DPS Trooper I talked to about 18 months ago said they were testing the optic. If chosen, they'd be switching out to all new guns instead of updating their current Sigs for the optics. |

Quoted: Do their current 320's have a manual safety (is that even an option)? If not, safety manipulation is DEFINIETLY going to require extensive training to make it a subconscious action on the draw. I'd worry more about the non-gun people... Same comment for using an RDS.....train, train, train. Depends on what holster they use. If its a Safariland with an ALS release button, the manual safety is in line with the release button and disengages on the draw. You don't have to make any subconscious action on the draw, just draw and the safety is already actuated into the fire position and ready to shoot. Anyone know what holster Texas DPS use for their P320's? |

I'm not near up to speed with the Sig issues. Does the M17 have the self-firing feature?

Thumb safety helps slow down a bad guy who gets a hold of an officer's gun. Some studies done on it showed much higher officer survival when departments switched to thumb safety models back in the day. So that part makes sense along with the optic choice. What doesn't make sense is choosing a 320 for anything right now.

The P226 is a great pistol, and was a great choice on their part. Choosing the P320 in 2015, based on the information that was available at the time, was a perfectly reasonable choice. Choosing another P320 variant in 2025, in light of the information currently available, is retarded. |

I forgot to post this last night. These were posted on Reddit by a trooper. The Trooper I spoke with in my district said specialized units can make modifications, he had an FDE grip frame compact but he was a helo dude. He said regular troopers were typically not allowed to make any changes. This fella below contradicts that, but that might be a rule for each district. Anyway, thought it was interesting this guy switched to the compact Wilson Combat grip. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Oklahoma Highway Patrol has long been a stalwart Sig franchise. The P220 was the first semi auto they ever issued, then the 226 in .357, then the Sig 320 in 9mm. Well, that run has ended. The Glock 47 MOS with Trijicon RDS and Surefire light is their new jam. The 320 is not only no longer issued, but once the Glock rollout is complete, the 320 will not be allowed to be carried at any time by Troopers. As for the Texas DPS M&P debacle, I sat in an M&P Armorer class with about two dozen TX Troopers right before rollout. They were quite adamant they had tested the hell out of them, and were sold on the platform. They were also very clear that the brass in Austin did not like the guns, and were trying to get the whole selection process canned. |

Quoted: Except M17/18's are going bang with the safety on as well Quoted: Quoted: Which is worse? A gun that doesn't go bang when you want it to or one that goes bang when you don't want it to? A 320 with a manual safety is the ultimate get both. Except M17/18's are going bang with the safety on as well I had not heard that yet. Until Glock gets an external safety, they will be out of the running for a lot of contracts. It is not an unreasonable request, as they can't always train enough to prevent accidents and retention can't always be assumed when rolling with suspects. So it comes down to Sig and M&P and maybe an FN somewhere for those contracts. Of course it can come down to pricing and support. Or kickbacks or perks, they are politicians after all. |
