While having to do some things around the house. I wanted to watch or listening to something while I was doing it. Then I remember the cool stories about the 2 1/2 ton trucks with Quad 50s in Vietnam that were used to defend American resupply routes. I found this pretty good, and relatively recent Documentary about them. Well, since I figured this is ARF and we love eating this stuff up, I've posted this here. Pretty cool shit .
ETA: I have to warn you about the sound. It is a little out of synch with the video. Gun Trucks Of Vietnam 720p |

I'm gonna save this for later so I can watch it on the big screen.
OP is mucho muy frio. |

5 tons were also used. There were a few that had m113 hulls in the bed.

I remember reading (As a kid in the 70's) about how "Dusters" (M42's) and '113 mounted "Vulcan" ADA systems were used as counter-ambush vehicles.

Oh, I know that they had the .50's on them (The trucks) but the idea of some NVA/VC ambush catching some 40MM "PomPom" or 20MM (@ 3,000RPM) action just makes me smile.

I have the gen0 monocular and binoculars they issued to the guntrucks with spotlights. Really cool, how I read they would move the turret with the early nightvision and then hit the white light so everyone else could open up.
Thank You, Going to watch this for sure! |

Back in the early '80's; a guy at work brought in some very similar pics. Not sure if he was a gunner or driver. I see him once in a while. Will have to ask him for more info.

I started a thread months ago when the Smithsonian Channel aired it's Gun Trucks of Vietnam special.
If you haven't seen that one, I'd recommend checking it out as well. Great watch. |

Worked with a guy who crewed on a quad .50 in Vietnam. Showed me some pictures of him with it. All he would say is that it was one incredible weapon, and there really was no place to hide from it.

My dads unit in the 101st had a deuce and a half Gun truck called Eve of Destruction.

The janitor where I work ran with those guys back in Vietnam. He doesn't get into it much, but every now and then will tell some tales from back then. One of the nicest guys I have ever met.

It's a shame that the lessons learned from Convoy OPs in Vietnam were so quickly forgotten. We had to start from scratch in 2003/4. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/119852/Hemmet_gun_truck-1247772.jpg https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/119852/Hybrid_M809_M113-1247775.jpg View Quote |

There was at least 1 gun truck mounting a pair of miniguns.
Quad 50s were more common. An Intel Colonel I worked for had me build a briefing on the subject for a general officer briefing during OIF. There were considerations of doing those again, but only one ("the Alabama Slammer") was built, & I don't think command ever let them use it. Then came the MRAPS. |

My gunsmith built 4 Ma Deuces from demill kits for a guy who had a quad 50 mount he was putting on a deuce and a half to build his own gun truck recreation. Eve was one of the examples he was copying but he went with the open back end to highlight the quad mount. http://www.vietnam-guntrucks.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Eve-of-Destruction.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/---Pkz_9cPUk/Ty8Cq-APnBI/AAAAAAAAAGg/ml8piSO8oe8/s1600/Nancy-with-88th-in-68-3.jpg View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

When I was in Iraq, we had guys told by Iraqi prisoners they were afraid of our unit. They were able to identify us from the large numbers Spray painted on the doors of the Hmmwv's. |

My brother drove a fuel truck , he said he only got shot at when he was in a convoy . He prefered driving alone .
One time they started taking fire from the left , the truck behind had its .50 cal pointed right . They opened up as they started swinging it . He said rounds went ripping through the canvas top of the truck in front of it . Attached File He was also at Bu Prang camp when Firebase Kate was overrun . He refueled Helicopters for the 7th Air Cav . Attached File |

They should have built up a trailer for that HETT. The amount of weight that thing can handle is immense.

I just watched it with my dad (he's a Vietnam Vet). It got him talking about being over there.
