While having to do some things around the house. I wanted to watch or listening to something while I was doing it. Then I remember the cool stories about the 2 1/2 ton trucks with Quad 50s in Vietnam that were used to defend American resupply routes. I found this pretty good, and relatively recent Documentary about them. Well, since I figured this is ARF and we love eating this stuff up, I've posted this here. Pretty cool shit .

ETA: I have to warn you about the sound. It is a little out of synch with the video.

I remember reading (As a kid in the 70's) about how "Dusters" (M42's) and '113 mounted "Vulcan" ADA systems were used as counter-ambush vehicles.

Quad .50s
Oh, I know that they had the .50's on them (The trucks) but the idea of some NVA/VC ambush catching some 40MM "PomPom" or 20MM (@ 3,000RPM) action just makes me smile.

I have the gen0 monocular and binoculars they issued to the guntrucks with spotlights. Really cool, how I read they would move the turret with the early nightvision and then hit the white light so everyone else could open up.

Thank You, Going to watch this for sure!

Back in the early '80's; a guy at work brought in some very similar pics. Not sure if he was a gunner or driver. I see him once in a while. Will have to ask him for more info.

I started a thread months ago when the Smithsonian Channel aired it's Gun Trucks of Vietnam special.

If you haven't seen that one, I'd recommend checking it out as well. Great watch.

Worked with a guy who crewed on a quad .50 in Vietnam.  Showed me some pictures of him with it.  All he would say is that it was one incredible weapon, and there really was no place to hide from it.

I also worked with a quad gunner, I remember him smiling and telling me, "we used to roll along with the supply trucks, and invariably some vc would get stupid and start firing at us, then we'd open up the gates of hell on him".

It's a shame that the lessons learned from Convoy OPs in Vietnam were so quickly forgotten. We had to start from scratch in 2003/4.

The janitor where I work ran with those guys back in Vietnam. He doesn't get into it much, but every now and then will tell some tales from back then. One of the nicest guys I have ever met.

My gunsmith built 4 Ma Deuces from demill kits for a guy who had a quad 50 mount he was putting on a deuce and a half to build his own gun truck recreation.  Eve was one of the examples he was copying but he went with the open back end to highlight the quad mount.

There was at least 1 gun truck mounting a pair of miniguns.
Quad 50s were more common.
An Intel Colonel I worked for had me build a briefing on the subject for a general officer briefing during OIF. There were considerations of doing those again, but only one ("the Alabama Slammer") was built, & I don't think command ever let them use it. Then came the MRAPS.

The Eve of Destruction is on display at the Transportation Corps museum at Fort Eustis, VA.  When they restored it a few years ago, they were still finding spent .50 cal casings in it.

It's a cleaver Psy Op.

A semi related story. When I was in Iraq, we had guys told by Iraqi prisoners they were afraid of our unit. They were able to identify us from the large numbers Spray painted on the doors of the Hmmwv's.

My brother drove a fuel truck , he said he only got shot at when he was in a  convoy . He prefered driving alone .
One time they started taking fire from the left , the truck behind had its .50 cal pointed right . They opened up as they started swinging it . He said rounds went ripping through the canvas top of the truck in front of it .

He was also at Bu Prang camp when Firebase Kate was overrun . He refueled Helicopters for the 7th Air Cav .

It's quite amazing how fast a force can scavenge and throw that stuff together when it hits the fan.

Some poorer units resorted to sandbags on the floor and makeshift scaffolding to hold the sandbags for the walls during the initial push in trucks.

I've seen those SF 5 tons, up close and personal. Holy shit, they had like what I'd guess to be an equivalent of a Company of infantry worth of firepower on just one truck. Maybe I'm overstating it, but damn.

And they had a handful of them.
