This is a gun everyone should own.  It's handy, it's cheap, it's a relatively nice gun (even after Remington buyout).  It feels like it'd be the perfect knockaround rifle to throw in your UTV or lease truck if you're feeling like something other than an AR15.

33in overall length
16in barrel
5 round capacity
6.52lbs
Walnut furniture
Blued (more like parkerized IMO) finish

Next to my 11.5" AR

This.

If I was going to have a .30-30, this would be the one.  As someone who mainly owns EBRs, The LOP feels considerably better than the full-size model.

I have an old Model 94 in 44Mag, and it's probably my favorite non-AR rifle. That Marlin looks nice.

If you go into to thinking it's a $399 budget 30-30 with no frills and basic fit and finish, I feel like you'll be happy.

It uses a loading gate rather than tube feed, so all it needs is to be sent to your local smith for threading

I don't know what's wrong with me because that is an excellent deal. I just can't get past the looks of that lever design. I grew up watching old black and white reruns of westerns and that made me fall in love with the Winchester designs.
I know it's dumb but aesthetics is everything to me.

I can't be the only one. I even changed out the lever on my ranch hand because the large loop doesn't look close enough to the design on "Wanted Dead or Alive" with Steve McQueen.

There are straight stocked 336s, but not the compact version unfortunately.

That being said, back in the day, the "pistol grip" stock option was considered an upgrade and wasn't cheap.  Look in any old catalogs in the early 1900s and you'll see Winchester charging extra for that option.

If you're good with projects...

Reminds me that I need an 1894C to wrap up my lever gun set, but no one seems to ever have one since they were (supposedly) reintroduced last year.

I recently picked up a Mossberg 464 in marinecoat with 16.25" barrel. It is a handy little carbine, and will be more so once I chop the stock a bit. $430 , not too shabby.

How much difference in 30-30 performance out of 16" instead of 20" barrel?
I'm guessing inside 100 yards it makes little if any difference?

I would buy an older one with a straight stock.  That is on my "buy it if you see it" list.  JM stamp only.

My current knock around truck gun is a Winchester 94, which I wish were shorter.

I guess if you prefer lever guns for some reason.

Otherwise, and for less money, you can get a same-overall-length bolt gun in a better caliber (.308), integral Picatinny rail, and with muzzle already threaded.

LOP?  I was shooting a 16" 94 yesterday.  It sucks off the bench getting it sighted in.  Light and handy though.  Great for deer season.

Take an 11.5" 6.5 Grendel with the 129gr ABLR (factory load BTW) and shoot it next to a 20" .30-30 with the 150gr Hornady RN:

11.5" 6.5 Grendel with a 129gr ABLR gives you:

100yds 2066fps 1223ft-lbs
200yds 1928fps 1065ft-lbs
300yds 1796fps 924ft-lbs
400yds 1671fps 800ft-lb

20" barreled .30-30 with a 150gr RN Hornady:

100yds 1879fps 1176ft-lbs
175yds 1599fps 852ft-lbs
200yds 1515fps 764ft-lbs

An 11.5" 6.5 Grendel has more energy at 400yds shooting a lighter bullet, than a 20" .30-30 does at 200yds. This is one of the easiest ways to show the layman how effective BC is compared to a known cartridge that dates back to 1895, and has been used to harvest untold numbers of deer and even large game at close range.

That said, I still think lever guns are fun and an important historical step in looking for an action that would handle repeating capability with metallic cartridges.

Have both, the 30-30 sees more field time than the 16" .308.  Lever guns carry much better than similarly sized bolt guns.

What new-in-box, iron sighted bolt rifle in .308 has a similar OAL, threaded barrel, and is cheaper?  I'm a little curious about this.  @W_E_G.

And if you're going to say the Mossberg Scout, that thing sucks.  The only place where it's a good rifle is in theory.

I have a Marlin "Texan", a model 336 in 30-30 with an 18" barrel.  It will be my primary deer shooting gun for my pole barn shooting house.

Pic of my lever actions, from top to bottom:  Winchester 94, 1952 (my dad's twin brother's deer rifle); Marlin 336 Texan in 30-30 (1986), Marlin 1895 in 45-70 (2001) and my Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag (2015).

Isn't that the same as the "Youth" model?  Or "Yute model" if you're a Fred Gwynne fan.

I bought a youth butt stock for my standard 336 due to LOP and using a scope.  With my thick padded winter hunting clothes on, I just could not use the scope.  Eye was too far from it.

EDIT: Derp..336Y

A trapper model 30-30 has been on my wishlist for a long time.  It's the only lever action gun I'm interested in, something about the shorter barrel makes it look good.  I've mostly been looking for  winchester, might have to check our this Marlin to join the Marlin 39A I got from my grandfather.
