I go to a LOT of Rolex vintage races - and it is very rare to see vintage Mercedes being raced.  That last one I photographed was at Lime Rock 2 years ago - and yes, it was worth several million dollars.  The owner had a pro take it out and run it during lunch.  Ballsy - very ballsy.

As far as Auto Union - no-one that owns one appears nutty enough to actually run them on the tracks I go to.

I'm talking "Period Pics " 1936-9 not Vintage BS races , Show Tazio Nuvolari (Italian)  & German Greats in the Auto Unions & MBZ team cars  ( The Auto Union and MBZ factory racers are the MOST expensive cars in the world .

1.  Vintage races aren't "BS".  They certainly beat the tar out of poseurs standing around garage queens parked at a show.  If you don't like vintage races - don't attend them.
2.  If you want action photos from 1936-39 I'm sure enough research and/or money on your part will turn them up.

Fine show some more 3rd tier racers  and rickety 10th placers , insted of the most vaunted & rarest Racers & most valuable cars in the world flying around the Spa or dueling in South America or at Monaco or North Africa or the Vanderbuilt Cup in Long Island NY .

Dear god... take a line already. Driving like it's fucking GT3 on PS2 or something...

Danger to not only himself but other drivers around. Fucking kids.

Also looks like a perfect example of why not to use DSC on the track.

There really is something wrong about having a truck that can hang with sportcars and in some cases utterly destroy a sportscar

Hate to tell you it's set up then. While I've never visited the Nurburgring I've raced and logged several hundred laps in a formula car at Miller in Utah and Laguna Seca. Who ever is driving the GT2 is not trying very hard.

Hate to tell you, but you obviously know nothing about Caterhams. The R500 weighs less than 1,200 pounds and sports a 263HP engine. To get the same power to weight ratio a GT2 would need over 740HP. GT2's don't come with anywhere near 740HP.

Put down your top gear trading cards and do some research or better yet get some experience. The Caterham driver was obviously more skilled than the GT2 driver unless the GT2 driver was sand bagging it. You can see the weight transfer on the Porsche or lack there of along with the lazy apex entry/exits to see the guy was not into it. Yet he was within 2 seconds in the turns.

Here a clip with two evenly matched drivers.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D69pNk5MGYk&feature=related

It's really close bu the Porsche prevails. At Least this time you can tell both are trying.

Shush. Cdog is a Real Race Car Driver. He's the only one on Arfcom qualified to comment. Just ask him.

Your choice. Take some advise from someone with experience or not. Do you argue with navy seals over equipment?

So we're supposed to take the advice of a guy 6000 miles away over the guy who was actually racing against the GT2 on the 'Ring.

Got it.  That other GT2 driver sucked.  Must have been sandbagging.

Yeah.

I went to the European Grand Prix there back in the 84'.  I also went to a the German Grand Prix at Hockenheimring.

Curious, have they ever driven a WRC rally car at Nurburgring? It should easily smoke any production car.

Many times. We did it in an Escort Cosworth, an Impreza Turbo, and in a Corolla. WRC cars are severly lacking in power, grip, and gearing.

I wonder what the tires were on the 599XX the stock street tires like they did with the GTR and ZR1 or racing tires.

just to jump in on the gt2 v r500, could it be that the r500 driver was just a bit more batshit hardcore racer?  i didn't see any shots of the gt2 nearly eating it or having the back end break loose by a bit.  i saw the one r500 jump and land a bit sideways and thought "i would shit my pants".  if i tried driving, i'd probably be like the guy in the "how not to drive" video.

You guys arguing about the Sabine GT2 vs. the Catherham are just kidding yourselves.  It wasn't a race - it was just a friendly contest around the Ring.  All of the passes were friendly, allowed and no blocking was attempted.  Sabine was not comfortable with the GT2 she was in - especially optimal gear changes in the right places - while the Cat driver had clearly spent a lot of time in it on that course, knew his car's optimal line, shift points and strengths.

I do this with friends (at the track) all the time.  I give passes and I get them.  Stop taking everything so seriously.

It's over the  GT2 vs. the Catherham vid in the OP. The Cat was trying while the GT2 driver was going on a Sunday drive. It's on the Internet...It must be true.

Sunday drive?  The person beat Horst von Saurma's time of 7:46 by what?  8 seconds?  6 Seconds?

The driver is no slouch and it was definitely not a "set up".

If it was Sabine driving, the fact that you criticize her line on the Ring is laughable.
