Ok OP - Thank you for costing me 33 or so bucks on that bandoleer.

I am thinking my goto build will be a flat top upper with a 20 inch pencil barrel, skinny rail forend, red dot or some sort and a MOE SL Stock....

I think that the 20 inch barrels are badass.

Wished I had never sold my M16A1 upper - it was sweet.

M16A1 clone, Remington 700 in .30-06, or a Weatherby chambered for .300 Weatherby are all absolutely appropriate boomer rifles.

That Leupold I linked earlier is right at $200.00 with the Duplex Reticle.  $249.00 with the Pig Plex Reticle.

I was able to hit an 8" plate at 200 yards using Wolf Gold 55gr FMJ on 3x, which equates to headshots at that range.

4x would certainly be better, but all 1-4x scopes I can find are big, fat, 30mm pigs, which defeats the lightweight and handy element.

I really REALLY want this $200 Weaver 1-3x20 to be brought back into production with illumination, and maybe a bit thicker duplex lines.  1" tube, Japanese glass, 9 oz- it would truly fill a void in the market for a small lightweight mid-tier GOOD LPVO

Primary Arms and Swampfox, if you make a small lightweight illuminated 1-4x it would SELL SELL SELL

Put one of the Primary Arms ACSS reticles on there with ranging holdovers.

Folks might cringe but I always hoped for something based on the CQ/T. The optics were fine, it had a great 1x, just needed a better reticle design and to eliminate all the extraneous rails and crap to get the weight down to a minimum. Integrated mount isn't necessarily a bad thing if it was done right.

My first LPVO was an AR Optics 1-4x24 with the FFP BTR reticle. Decent quality, but the reticle was so small at 1x that it was basically useless unless you had the brightness on full with a fresh battery. I also had issues with the turrets getting adjusted off my zero from ordinary handling of the rifle. The form factor was about perfect, but those two issues led me to replace it. I've been much happier with my RT-6, even though it's bigger and heavier.

Maybe keep a lookout for a used MTAC or similar 1-4 though. That'll probably get you a lot more optic for your dollar than any of the sub-200-new LPVOs can give you.

I built this 16" to suit me. 7.5# with a loaded 20 rounder.

I set it up for both a single-point and a two point sling.

Good article. I can dig it. Now I'm envisioning The Villages Militia Battalion

3x seems a bit low... even with the additional weight I'd think more top end magnification would be desirable.

See if you can find a Leupold Mark AR Firedot 1.5-4x. They're as close as you'll get to that Weaver with illumination.

Scope production is moving away from low weight. It seems like people are fixated on big tube diameters and huge magnification ranges.

I like your concept,  OP. ARs  can be very light, handy,  and fully functional with standard parts. I have a 16" that I used to have loaded up with a bunch of stuff.  The more I take off, the more I like it.

Barrett Fieldcraft in 6.5cm.
Leupold VX5 3-15.
Really comfy sling.
Walking stick with a rifle rest on it.

It really is.

The 1.5-4x is a great multi range scope on An ar.

I guess this would be my old man working gun.  I built it about 10-12 years ago.

Lightweight BCM upper on a DM lower with Bushmaster internals.  7lb empty.

I can still use the red dot but a lower powered variable scope will probably be in my future.

This is a timely thread. My Dad is rockin' a Remington 7600 in 30-06, and has (to my great surprise) amassed an impressive collection of ten-round magazines for same. He scored them and a whole bunch of 150 gr Core-Lokt when he was working gun shows. He keeps the rifle  close at hand, and he has staged mags around the house. Today I helped him put together a response belt- three magazines, tourniquet, light. He ain't John Wick, but neither will he go gently into that good night if the balloon goes up.

If I understand the intent of this thread, Dad has nailed it- a rifle he's dead-asleep familiar with, in a proven fighting caliber. There are social shotguns sprinkled about the house as well. I make sure I bump the horn a couple times before I knock on the front door these days.

My 70+ yr old mom has a windham 16” setup like the OP’s top rifle.  I think it has a 2x7 vortex on it.  Perfect for pest control on the farm.

I think I would lean towards something like PA’s new 2x for town work

I like that.  My .458S would transition nicely into that look.

ETA:  Might have to switch that to 6.5G.  The .458 is a short thumper.

Sights are everything. Red dot is first (quickest and easiest to use). Scope is second (great in that they don't need battteries).

My vision has done a complete 180degree turn as I reached 60

I now have better than 20/20 distance vision
Can’t see to read without reading glasses, though

Kinda good because I really feel that irons are adequate for any thing 200 yds or under. Maybe not gonna make consistent headshots but good enough for center mass
The front sight post is just at that point of still being sharp

Been wanting an American made red dot just because, but hesitant to spend $460 only to find out
it’s not all that

Close up cqb and super quiet with a can or reach out and touch stuff at 300+ meters with the switch of a mag.

I may change my mind but for now ( I'm 66) I'll stick with my five ARs bone stock dialed at 50 yards with iron sights only along with a pair of AIs. One in .308 and one in 6CM. Both have NF ATACRs. If I can't solve problems from 1400 to CQB with these we'll switch to the Mossy 500s and 9MMs. After that it's my tractor, hammers and then the dog IF they get me God help them 'cause Mom is next.
