Bases are how our troops get resupply. It's like if you had stashes all throughout the state in different friends's houses while conducting a guerilla war. You can get food and ammo from anywhere from whithin the state rather than going back to your home to get supplies.
In Afghanistan we got stuff from Kuwait, Qatar, Iraq, Turkey, and many places. Even Europe. China would have to get stuff from home. If they landed here, they would be a long ways from home.

I don't think they are seriously contemplating coming here, at least anytime soon. They are focused on defense of the SCS and maintaining access to needed external resources to keep their economy moving. So they will resupply from home without much issue. The furthest critical resupply they need to worry about is oil from the mid east, and they are in the process of mitigating that pressure point.
When you say supply chain to a manufacturing guy we think back past depots. Supply chains stretch well into the larger economy and across multiple countries.
If they are smart they won't fight a war at all. That plays to our strength. They will figure out the soft power game eventually, and we will have to escalate the trade issues to weaken them.
I'm not convinced we will have the wisdom or will to do that.
