I remember the mid 2000’s reading here than anything above 100 lumens will blind you in a CQB scenario. Incandescent was still superior to LED.
Now a $17 two pack of LED headlamps have 1200 lumens. The advancement of tech with flashlights is mind boggling. What was cutting edge 3-5 years ago is downright antiquated. All of my lights are old tech, but I feel like I’m wasting my money buying anything new because it will be out of date in a year or two. Anyone care to explain what the hell is going on in the flashlight world? Will we ever plateau? |

I saw one of the old 6-D Maglites the other day, look how far we have come.

I still have a pelican m6 and like it for some tasks. I have other more powerful flashlights but sometimes the less intense light is better.

I found 2 of my mag lights this week. I need to throw them away

Remember the old generator powered headlights for bicycles back in the day? I would have killed for a modern LED.

And American consumers are stupid enough to buy it. That light is only above 1,200 lumens for about 30 seconds. It drops from 4,600 lumens to 2,000 lumens in less than 10 seconds. Always look at "high" vs turbo ratings. It is more telling to a lights true capabilities, which I don't even see published for this light. I'll give them credit for making it a 21700 light though. |

First, make sure you convert Chinese Lumens to ANSI Lumens (i.e. reality). Those "1200 lumen" headlamps may be closer to 500 in reality.
But yes, flashlight tech has gotten much better. More powerful emitters, better efficiency to reduce heat buildup and dissipation needs, longer run times, all great things. I'm not a serious flashlight guy at all but to my eye it seems like flashlights had both a bad and good change when the anti-vaping campaign ramped up. The plentiful 18650 batteries seemed to stop being so readily available and flashlights stopped being so married to that form factor. Bad for battery compatibility, possibly good for niche form factor lights. |

To the ops point....back in the early 90s my buddies and I would share one or two mag lights that we're candles compared to the cheapest Amazon lights today. We were still glad to have them. |

No doubt, it sure is. I laugh at the then-expensive state of the art from 10 to 15 years ago we have in the drawers, compared to what I can find in the "camping" section at Wally world today. And that's not even dreaming of chasing new top tier branded stuff. It is freaking amazing.

Guns will continue to improve too. Don’t buy one until they’re done getting better.

I remember being out in the woods at night with my friend in the late 80s. I had one of those 2 D flashlights with the push switch that were so ubiquitous, he had what we thought was a slice of the sun in his D cell maglite.
I still have an old Maglite, LED one at that, and I can't believe how we ever thought they were bright. |

It hurts to look at the reflection of it off a flat white painted wall. You can find out what state of the art is, and will be, at the ARFcom of flashlights, budgetlightforum.com. They don't just do builds there, they design the lights from scratch and then get flashlight companies to build them. My 6500 lumen lights are actually BLF Edition versions that I got on a group buy off the forum, with the site logo engraved right into the aluminum body from the manufacturer. |

Back in the mid 90s I was heavily involved in mountain biking and racing. From 94-98 I started riding singletrack at night with friends. I had a AA mini-mag light taped to my helmet and a 3D cell mag lite hosed clamped to my handlebar. It worked, but was overall dim and just barely usable. The lighting systems are absolutely insane today and illuminate everything.

My old lights are bright enough to let me see an intruder. They won't be blinded by the light but the shots to the face might impair their vision.

I have a few Surefire flashlights that were peak incandescent technology, just as LEDs were starting to gain traction in the market. I paid good money for those lights. But today the output and runtime of those Surefires is comical compared to inexpensive LED lights.
One of my favorite lights has been out of production for years now—the Four Sevens CR2. It’s a tiny twist-activated light with three output levels. Great UI, decent color temperature, a nice beam/flood balance, and enough light for almost every task at home or around the campsite. Let me know if you have one you want to sell. |

Quoted: Yeah...no. See my comment above about American consumerism. View Quote Haven't looked at that one, but the forum I linked tests (to ANSI standards) a lot of the lights on the market to see what they will really do. My 6500 lumen lights (tested out at a touch over 6700 lumens) have heat sinks built into the body for exactly the reason you state. They get hot pretty fast. The light level of them can be turned up and down like a volume knob. I generally find halfway up exceeds most of my needs. |

I have a $40 keychain light that is easily three times brighter than all the gun lights I bought about 10 years ago. They were all in the $80-120 range iirc.

In 300 years look what we can look forward to:
https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Palm_beacon I not one rush out and buy the latest and greatest. I have surefire weapon lights that are 10+ years old that are still very serviceable and have all the light I need. I also have a couple of recent models with 1,000 lumens which are great, but produce more light than I need. I would rather see the technology evolve toward better efficiency and battery life. Imagine a 1,000 lumen light with a 100 hour run time on a rechargeable battery that produces little to no heat. That would be amazing. |

The really neat thing is if anyone yearns for the LED light technology and prices of 5-10 years ago, the 2024 SureFire catalog should be out in a few weeks.
