A buddy of mine had one identical to that when we were in high school.

He was going down the road one day just under light speed and ran off the road. The way I heard it was that he basically launched that car several feet into the air. It landed on tires okay but it destroyed the frame.

There’s a third gen club here in town. They have everything from total restorations to survivors. They meet one a month or so at a local Bbq joint.
Kinda cool to drop by a check them out.

They handle awesome.  My t tops squeaked until I welded in subframe connectors, now they are quiet.  I always have a grin on my face when I drive it, I just wish I could hook up without pulling 50% of the pedal.

After the Porsche and Saab threads you started tonight I had just dismissed you as someone with absolutely no taste in cars whatsoever, but this thread redeems you, a little...  I turned 16 in 1986 so you can imagine my desire for a new IROC-Z back then.  I've grown up substantially since then but still wouldn't mind having one in my garage.

FPNI.

Christ I hated those things! Grew up outside Eugene Oregon and every dirtbag meth enthusiast had one, usually up on blocks. It was odd to see one moving, but when they did you could see that they weren't going to be on the road for long.

For a functional vehicle they would usually have either a almost clapped out Honda Civic or a lifted truck that they would run me off the road with.

If an Iroc or a bargain basement bro dozer wants to run me off the road nowadays I wouldn't hesitate to unload a carbine into it.

They were great looking cars, with good engines and lots of power.
The problem was, the rest of the car was econobox cheap.  The early steering wheels and seats weren't fit for a go cart.
Low quality plastic garbage everywhere in the interior.

The salesmen just let kids in their late teens and early twenties test drive these things and told them to punch it and they were sold, if Daddy and Momma gave them the cash.  The problem was insurance cost for young people.
My sister took one for a test drive, and ended up with a Nissan 300 instead.  Smart choice.

The T Top models where the worst for rattles. Also why you could only get a 305 in the T Top. They had too much flex for the 350.

One of the Cheerleader's at my HS got one from her dad brand new. It was red and beautiful. She pulled out of the hangout McDonalds hard on the 2nd day she had it, nicked the curb and flipped it over against a tree. The crowd ran over and had to bust open the hatch to get her out. It was weird seeing this super-shiny car upside down against a tree

Wrong on the engine.

The only combo engine/trans you couldn't get was a 5.7 with a 5 speed in a convertible.

Yup, I always wanted one especially when the 350 TPI was powering it.

I have lived in an area populated by Italians my whole life.
On top of that Camaros and Firebirds were built locally in St Therese Quebec.
My client owns the building where SLP modified the special editions.

You can say that I've seen a few.

I don't have pictures of mine showing the whole car.  I just have the closer pictures I took for the insurance company when I transferred the tags to antique tags and got antique insurance on it.

1986.  5.0 TPI.  700r4 with a 3.42 rear end.  4 wheel disc brakes.  I actually put front rims on all four corners a few years back so I could rotate the dang tires, at least from front to back as the original rear rims offset required taking the tires off the rims, remounting them to the other rims and rebalancing the whole thing (front and rear rims have different offsets and the rear rims/tires still had a spacer between the axle hub and rim to move the rim/tire outward so the tire wouldn't rub - never did figure out why they didn't just make the offset correct in the first place).

I love it.  I spent years embarrassing BMWs, Porshes, Turbo Mitsubishis, etc. on the interstate ramps and interstates.  And I know my old IROC isn't quicker/faster than some of those cars so I was embarrassing the drivers of those expensive cars that paid 2X or more what I paid for my old IROC Z28.

I've replaced the exhaust once (Edelbrock exhaust has lasted and sounds great, too), had the transmission rebuilt once, had the rear end rebuilt once, put a starter on it, been through a few sets of tires, a couple batteries, redid the headliner myself (need to go back and do that right now that I figured out how to do it and make it look good), had the computer just die about 10 years ago and the replacement is acting up again (but the car will still send the back end sideways in the road if I smack the pedal down from a start), never had it above 120/125 mph on the interstate but it was just humming along/not even breathing hard and stable as can be, usually got about 23 mpg on a road trip (even the way I drive) with a best of 27 mpg when I actually drove the speed limit of 65 mph on the interstate.  I need to drive it more.

If it had a 5 speed I probably never would have bought my Genesis Coupe (3.8 Track with the 6 speed manual transmission).

It's Really Only a Camaro

I said that to a guy when I worked in a parts store years ago. His was in excellent condition and he was so proud of it, however he would come in all the time and wan't parts for his "IROC" and would only call it that. When I asked him what it stood for he paused and then I said it. Dude went from white to red and went ballistic that IROC wasn't just a camaro it was a supercar and on and on and on.

Neighbor has one with some 400 cubic inch stroker motor, thing is seriously fast, think he runs low 11s.

The car is a damn rattle trap because that screaming engine  twists the windows out of it every time he stomps on the pedal.

My brother sliced one in half.  Driving on an icy road, got sideways and hit a 3" thick pine tree just in front of the rear fender opening on the driver's side.  The tree went completely through the car.  By brother didn't get a scratch, but a damn pulpwood trash tree totaled that IROC.

Formulas were the best thirdgens. They got all the performance options while remaining light weight and stereotype free.

Chassis reinforcements are a good idea on these cars.

Go T56 or go home.

Any engine that came with a carburetor belongs in the trashcan. TPI provided a much needed performance boost at the time, but the intakes are restrictive and overly complicated. There are better aftermarket options now.

These days it makes a lot more sense to just do an LS swap.
