In the 80s in Germany I was in a Unit that flew VIPs. We flew the 5th Corps CG, the 3rd COSCOM CG, and a bunch of others. Some were great, others were assholes. You would land in the middle of nowhere and they would jump ina vehicle and off they went with no word fromt he General or his dog robber where they were going or when to expect them back. We had this patch made up for our flight suits...

That is cool.

All we had were these during range clearance ops.

I always liked the 527th Aggressor Squadron patch when they were at RAF Alconbury in the '70s and '80s.

Yeah, that's a "ghost" division...135th airborne division.

The division never existed except on paper.

Sort of lacking on the "death comes with big, gnarly teeth" front, but of all the commands I've been in this is my favorite.

History of the 11th is amazing (to include Jimmy Stewart in Strategic Air Command), and the real driver behind the patch was The Grey Geese from WWII, but I always like to think of it as someone in SAC's tongue-in-cheek admonition to get your ducks in a row...

No, that's the original 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) beret flash with the 1st Special Forces Regiment distinctive unit insignia worn by all SF soldiers on it.  It was worn from 1961 to 1964 and then again from 1985 to 2016.

In 1985 then-COL James A. Guest 'retired the famous Vietnam-era 5th SFG (A) flash to "wipe the stain of Vietnam off"* .  His CSM said "I'm tired of seeing our flash on every biker in Fayetteville".  Of course, most of those bikers had been in 5th SFG (A).

In 2016, the 5th SFG (A) restored the famous Vietnam-era flash (which the troops had be agitating for for years).

* This is the stain.  With additions after this was published, 16 Special Forces Soldiers assigned or attached to the 5th SFG (A) received the Medal of Honor in the Republic of Vietnam.

Speaking of stains, the 18th Fighter Wing in Okinawa has a patch with an interesting supposed urban legend...

Almost everyone of a certain vintage in the Air Force has been told the 18th's air crews launched advance of a Chinese onslaught, and flew away to leave the ground crews to fend for themselves. They fought bravely, but were over-run, and the maintenance crews were strung up with their own safety wire...

As punishment, the 18th wears a yellow patch, signifying cowardice, with a chicken raising it's wings in surrender. The 18th was further punished by never being assigned to the continental US. They have to wear this sign of ignominy until they redeem themselves in a fierce battle involving heavy losses.

Air Force historians say it's bullshit...
