Very common among German immigrants too in the 1600s and 1700s.

Nope. It was pretty widespread. Heck, there was a reason Irish in LE was so common back in the day. It was one of the few jobs that no-one else wanted, an a mick with little education could get.

"The Irish slave trade began when 30,000 Irish prisoners were sold as slaves to the New World. The King James I Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies. By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves.
Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white.
From 1641 to 1652, over 500,000 Irish were killed by the English and another 300,000 were sold as slaves. Ireland’s population fell from about 1,500,000 to 600,000 in one single decade. Families were ripped apart as the British did not allow Irish dads to take their wives and children with them across the Atlantic. This led to a helpless population of homeless women and children. Britain’s solution was to auction them off as well." John Martin, "The Irish Slave Trade-The Forgotten "White" Slaves".

Well, it was actually a black man in Virginia (who owned a number of white and black "indentured servants" who filed the lawsuit (and won!) That created the institution of slavery. Owning white people was, in the beginning, far more common than owning black  Also, there were a number of large land/ slave owners in the South during the Civil War period. As to lynching Irish, it wasn't uncommon, and was unremarkable because no-one cared what happened to them. So, in fact, it was level of interest both at the time and by historians that leaves us with our current perceptions.  History is seldom what we want it to be, and it is never

My family came to America in 1611. Prior to that they were suppressing the Irish in Ireland. My ancestor was English but was given a castle by Queen Elizabeth in Ireland after he massacred a bunch of the Irish who lived on the lands there. At one point he pulled some shit that was pretty similar to the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones; called a peace conference and then barred the doors and murdered everyone. The Irish got their revenge though: they hung him and one of his sons from a big tree (I think he used the same tree to hang Irishmen IIRC). Pretty fucked up family history.

Actually... for the first hundred years or so of slavery in the colonies, African slavery was not hereditary and there were free blacks who held papers on white indentured servants (slaves).  There are court documents regarding law suits detailing some of the disputes when owners tried to dodge freeing slaves at the end of their indenture.
