They were all called delis growing up.  Even after the Koreans bought them from the jews.

A bodega in NYC would be a deli on Long Island. (Minus the loose cigarettes and EBT fraud.)
The bodega on my corner was owned by a Korean. He had a Mexican who worked for him. Eventually they went in together as partners, and bought a second store.
They were looking at buying more when I moved. It was a real American success story.

It means “building” or “barn” in Spanish, depending where you are.  I use it when speaking Spanish.

The modern, hipster, English speaking use makes me roll my eyes.

Do you use this term?  If you do where do you live?

Give a short description of what it is.

If you live in an area where the term is used (mostly NYC?) are they corporate or locally owned.

In my area they would mostly be called convenience store, gas station or by their name like 7-11

Any other similar terms?

I learned the term from Sipowitz

In New York City, a bodega is a small owner-operated convenience store.

The little store on the corner is called "the store", "the deli" or "insert name of the guy who owns it".

Larger stores are called their name with a "the" in front: "I'm going to THE Wawa".

Bodega is used by suburban children, transplants from Nuuu Yaaaawwwwkk, and reporters from the Philadelphia Inquirer who thinks everyone that lives in the city limits is black.

The only place I've heard it was in movies that took place in NYC. I've never heard it in real life, locally, in 98% Mexican area.

Live near Reading PA.

Yup, they are the shitty hispanic corner markets. Store exterior is plastered with ads promoting lottery tickets, tobacco / vaping, and EBT. Store merchandise is an odd mix of random ethic food brands and dollar store and aldi stuff being flipped at 100% markup.

We have at least one with that in it's name in Lebanon.
Fun fact. These types of stores are the only ones I see in town with bars all over every door and window.

Lol “bodegas” are the buildings where they keep the wine.  It’s the same word when used to describe any other building. It’s also one of the handful of words that can (regionally) mean “cellar”.

Gas stations aren’t bodegas generally, and they are almost entirely independently owned or small chains.
