It’s been two weeks since Ford opened up the all-new GT order banks. So how are things going? Well, let’s just say competition is fierce. View Quote Ford says as of April 19th it’s received more than 7,000 applications, or pre-orders, to buy one of the mid-$400,000 supercars. Only 500 of them will be built. |

7,000 people have signed up to buy the car for the full $400k asking price, and Ford is only building 500 of them?

Pre-orders are the new marketing hotness for automobiles.
It allows the manufacturer to keep the models in the news (when they reach large numbers) and it allows the participants to promote themselves as "future owners". Adding another layer of exclusivity (through an acceptance procedure) to weed out the talkers, bullshitters, and speculators allows the actual market to feel special. Ford knows how many they would sell if the market was completely open. Reduce that number by 20% and let everybody have fun playing the game. |

Production estimates are approximately 250 GTs per year for several years. Ford has not released the exact number of years they will produce the new GT. The base price for most of the 2005 GTs was $140K. In June of the 2005, the base price was increased to $150K for the remainder of 2005 and all of 2006. The four available options (painted stripes, painted calipers, optional wheels, and McIntosh stereo) added an additional $17K to the sticker price. If I recall correctly, a 2006 GT with the Gulf Heritage paint, painted calipers, optional wheels, and McIntosh stereo was ~$183K. |

Historic car, not your average prius. In 2004 only 550 were made. Since then used prices have gone up for them.

Whatever 'rise in value' that happens will not be seen by Ford. That's bad business. |

The 2005/6 GT is one of my few dream cars and would have been a smart investment for anyone who got one. They did make several thousand; but more than doubling in price at this time says they are still in high demand a decade later.
It's nice to see that many of them are being built up and raced instead of sitting in a garage somewhere never being driven. I do like the look of the upcoming GT; but I still much prefer the previous one. I still find it hard to believe that Ford has 7,000 people who are willing to spend what will be close to half a million dollars after mark-up, options, and taxes. I want to say if push came to shove and they had a far greater allotment; they wouldn't even sell as many as in 2005/6. |
