2 adults, 8 kids. The juveniles are damn near as big as the parents now. Found some feathers today. It's a nice way to spend a Sunday.

I always thought turkey feathers were kind of neat looking.
But damn, if they aren't some ugly ass birds!

A huge flock hangs around my area frequently.  Been killing coyotes on a regular basis.  Hopefully, next year they will increase in numbers.

My best friend has 100 acres south of San Antonio,  the turkey population there has been growing steadily over the past several years.  Their internal clocks are pretty strong, they show up at the deer feeder for corn before the deer do.

Their heads may be ugly, but the only other bird with as many colors and variations in their plumage is the pigeon.

And when the Tom’s head goes chalk white or blue, it is cool to see.

Running turkeys look like velociraptors. I was sitting in a low spot watching a flock run across a pasture so they were at eye level then add binos. Raptors!

Hopefully your friend is killing off the hogs or they will decimate the turkey habitat and nest.

This.

Several years ago my buddy and I came into hunting permission on a piece of land a dentist friend of ours owns.
There was a small stream lined with cottonwoods on the East side of the section. We’d set up a deer feeder and some stands in there for later.

The turkeys had taken to roosting in the cottonwoods nearby and coming down to the feeder in the morning.

We set up around twenty yards out, looking to call some Toms out from the tree line.
Then we hear this otherworldly screeching. Like fucking chimpanzees at war.
Had no idea what the hell was going on, but the commotion caused the turkeys to fly down on the other side of the tree line. We were screwed.

So we moved south, set up against the tree line where it bent around with the stream.
Decoys out we started calling. Got some responses, but never saw a turkey.
I did see a coyote come looking… she ran to within five yards of my decoy and I rolled her up. I wasn’t getting a turkey that day.

Hung the ‘yote on the fence. Picked up our decoys, and walked to the feeder. Re-filled it and got the SD out of the game camera.

The screeching? Two big male raccoons tearing into each other. No idea why, don’t know raccoons or their behavior.
But damn they were loud. Cost us our turkeys that day.

God I love hunting.

We have them all over here. They walk in the road and cause traffic jams.
We're not allowed to hunt them, though. If S does ever HTF, we have plenty to eat around here.

For a few years, there was a flock of them who would sleep in the trees right behind my (as close as 20 feet away).

The “thump” of their wings when they would take off from the ground was impressive; used to startle me all the time.

I could also tell when sundown was almost to the minute, they would fly up there just a few minutes before sunset.

I watched one fly up into a dogwood tree last Friday morning. There were 9 of them milling about and one flew into the tree, I guess to get to the berries. I had never witnessed one doing that while feeding but I have seen them fly up to roost many times. They aren't very graceful when they soar down and land, its more like a controlled crash.

I do believe that it's illegal to collect their feathers without a permit however.

Our farm has lots of turkeys, we will see 100+ after the corn is harvested gleaning the fields.

There is a big flock that lives in the treeline of the field next door.  They range up and down the cornfield that is right next to my house, and at times have been in my backyard snacking under the bird feeder.

We had to fence the yard to keep in our new rescued nearly-feral coonhound, and moved the feeder to the front yard. There  was a turkey strolling along my front walk this spring before we took the feeder down.

We can hunt them here but we don't. We kind of like watching them more.

Haven't seen any flocks of turkeys around here.

Saw Flock of Seagulls here back in the 1980s, though.

They didn't know how to play their instruments. Audience boo'ed them and threw shit at them. Seagulls ended the concert and flew away.
